This page lists the 161 countries and 14 dependent territories I have visited as well as which territories are considered "countries" by my (hopefully reasonable) definition (in total 206 and 50). It additionally lists in some cases the visits of sub-entities of a federation or an international body as well as some other statistics. Furthermore, it contains countries which are scheduled to be visited within a short period of time or are being seriously considered.
Territories that are considered "countries" and "dependencies"
[edit]The whole land area of Earth is to be covered by territories considered "countries", therefore visiting a territory which is a dependency of a sovereign state is considered visiting the motherland.
The following 206 territories are considered "countries":
Classification | Fulfilling this classification | Number | Cumulative total | |
---|---|---|---|---|
(1) | 193 United Nations member states | 193 | 193 | |
(2) | Territories that are diplomatically recognised by at least one United Nations member state | Abkhazia, the Cook Islands, Kosovo, Niue, Northern Cyprus, Palestine, South Ossetia, Taiwan, the Vatican City and Western Sahara | 10 | 203 |
Territories that are diplomatically recognised by at least one country listed under any section of (2) | Transnistria | 1 | 204 | |
(3) | Territories that are otherwise independent in the sense of the Montevideo Convention, claim independence and have their own entry controls (and, by the way, are listed in the Wikipedia list of sovereign states) | Somaliland | 1 | 205 |
(4) | An area which due to multilateral treaty is not under sovereignty of any state | Antarctica | 1 | 206 |
An entry into a dependency (any territory that is listed in the ISO 3166-1 list that does not qualify as a country under the above definition, or the United Kingdom Sovereign Base Areas) will be listed additionally while counting as a visit to the motherland.
The following 50 territories are considered "dependencies":
- 49 of the 249 territories listed in the ISO 3166-1 list that are not "countries" under the above definition (note that there are a total of six "countries" above that are not included in the ISO list; these are Abkhazia, Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, Somaliland, South Ossetia and Transnistria all of which are not included for political reasons),
- the United Kingdom Sovereign Base Areas
So there are 206 countries and an additional 50 dependencies, making up a total of 256 entities that are tracked.
Additionally, an entry into a country's sub-entity that controls immigration separately from the mainland is listed as well. Subjects of international law in their own right who own property which was granted extraterritoriality by the host state (but who have no sovereignty over any part of their property) are tracked as well.
Unless otherwise noted, an entry into a country with dependencies was into its mainland (motherland).
Rules
[edit]Regarding which country is actually visited
[edit]In case two countries (according to the rules) claim the same point of a territory the following rules apply:
- When the two countries basically claim the same territory overall (e.g. China and Taiwan, North and South Korea), the country visited is determined per the government which actually controls the visited territory.
- When one country basically claims the whole territory of another country but not vice versa (e.g. Cyprus claiming Northern Cyprus, Serbia claiming Kosovo) visiting the territory claimed by both means visiting the latter country even if that territory is controlled by the former country.
- When two countries claim the same territory (but there are parts of each country not claimed by the other, e.g. parts of Kashmir being claimed by China, India and Pakistan) the country visited is determined per the government which actually controls the visited territory.
Regarding divisions and mergers of countries
[edit]After a merger of countries (e.g. of West and East Germany) the new country is considered to have been visited if any of the formerly independent countries had been visited. If entries into several of the formerly independent countries took place, the numbering is changed accordingly (with the first entry into any of the formerly independent countries counted as the first entry into the merged country).
After a division of a visited country (e.g. of Serbia and Montenegro) every country whose territory was actually visited is considered to have been visited if this territory was clearly identifiable at the time of a visit before the split-up (e.g. as a state of a federal state or as a de facto independent state with its own border checks).
In any case merger or division is to be explained by a footnote.
Regarding entry and exit
[edit]A first entry into a country is considered to have taken place if a foot or another part of body has touched the soil of a country and an immigration control has taken place (if such is supposed to take place). If formal immigration control is not supposed to take place (e.g. within the Schengen Area) touching the soil of a country is sufficient for first entry into a country. If formal immigration control is in principle supposed to take place but is generally ignored (e.g. in the border area of Brazil/Colombia/Peru) touching the soil of a country - and doing something in the country (eating a meal, drinking a beverage, buying an item etc.) - is sufficient for first entry into a country.[Note 1]
Actually touching the surface is not considered necessary any more for later entries into a country visited or for sub-entities of a visited country.
The date of entry is the local date of the (last of the) following action(s) taking place: (a) having a solid connection to the country's soil[Note 2]; (b) having legally[Note 3] passed immigration control (if applicable).[Note 4]
The date of exit is the local date of severing the solid[Note 5] connection to the country's soil, under the condition that an entry into that country according to the above rules had taken place before. A country has only been exited when the next solid connection is with the soil of a different country.[Note 6]
Fourteen-day challenge
[edit]The challenge is to cross an international border on the 14th day after the day of the previous crossing of an international border, i.e. if an international border has been crossed on day 1 (local time, at any time), to keep up the streak an international border must be crossed by 2359 hours on day 15.
An international border is crossed in time when there was an exit or an entry according to the above rules within the required timeframe.
Regarding transits
[edit]Transits in countries without entering the country according to the rules above is to be documented, too. There is to be a new list of countries which were visited only in transit. Any being in the jurisdiction of a country while being physically connected to the soil of that country is considered a transit.
Countries (and dependencies) visited, scheduled and seriously considered
[edit]
Countries in dark green have already been visited whereas light green indicates new countries which are to be visited soon.
Orange indicates new countries travel to which is currently being seriously considered or where a transit is scheduled to take place.
A dark green boundary around the country's shape indicates a country that was visited only in transit, a light green boundary a country that is scheduled to be visited in transit.
The dying of e.g. Greenland or French Guiana does not necessarily mean that I have visited these entities; it simply means that, in this case, Denmark and France have been visited and that Greenland belongs to Denmark (for the sake of my rules) and French Guiana to France, respectively.

Countries (and dependencies) scheduled to be visited
[edit]A country is "scheduled to be visited" if flights or hotel accomodation have been booked or a visa has been granted.

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Comoros | 162 | March 16, 2025 | March 22, 2025 | [FutureTravel 9] |
Countries (and dependencies) seriously considered to be visited
[edit]A country is "seriously considered to be visited" if flights, hotel accomodation and/or visa procedures have been looked for, there is a travel partner or a person to be visited and/or a more or less fixed time window within the next twelve months has been assessed. A country may also be summarized under this section if it is located very close to a country scheduled to be visited and a short trip to this country is well conceivable. It may also appear here if it is a place of change of flights where there may be enough time to formally enter the country while changing flights.
Countries (and dependencies) visited in airport transit
[edit]Airport transit is not considered an entry into the country if there is no immigration control which would otherwise have to take place. This fact is reflected in the list of countries visited during airport transit before visiting them properly according to the rules.
Of course, in almost every country there are some minutes of airport transiting in this sense before properly entering the country. Therefore only transits are listed where a proper entry did not take place within 24 hours or before touching another country's soil whichever is earlier. Furthermore, countries are not listed if they were visited in airport transit after having been properly visited earlier.

Countries (and dependencies) not yet visited
[edit]Countries (or dependencies) lost
[edit]A country (or dependency) is considered lost if it merges with another (previously visited) country, leading to a decrease of the number of countries (or dependencies) visited.

Countries (or dependencies) won
[edit]A country (or dependency) is considered won if it emerges from a divide with another (previously visited) country, leading to an increase of the number of countries (or dependencies) visited without (again) setting foot into the country.

Merger and division issues
[edit]- ^ a b c d "Germany" is to be understood as the Federal Republic of Germany. A visit to East Germany (German Democratic Republic) took place from July 25 to August 5, 1989. As the German Democratic Republic had been a United Nations member state from 1973 to 1990, the country was considered the eighth visited.
France was originally the ninth visited country. After East Germany ceased to exist as a sovereign state, France became the eighth visited country. - ^ a b c On Serbia and Montenegro took place. This entry was to Montenegro. On March 22, 2004, a separate entry into that state union took place, this time to Serbia. On June 3, 2006, Montenegro declared its independence from the state union. Serbia is the legal successor of that state union. Nevertheless, Montenegro is counted here to have been visited first as the first entry to Serbia and Montenegro was to Montenegro. So the entries are considered as if Serbia and Montenegro had dissolved prior to the entries taking place. This does not affect the numbering, though. Both countries were visited afterwards so that the counting is correct in any respect. March 7, 2004, an entry into the then state union of
- ^ a b c d On January 1, 2024 the Republic of Artsakh (which had been recognized by a number of non-UN member states which, in turn, had been recognized by UN member states) was dismantled and its territory absorbed by Azerbaijan. The number of visited countries decreased to 154, and the number of countries to be visited to 206. Country numberings remained unaffected.
Recognition issues
[edit]- ^ The Vatican City is diplomatically recognized as independent by Germany. There are diplomatic relations with the Holy See.
- ^ The Holy See is recognized by a number of United Nations member states as a sovereign entity which is not a state. The Republic of Italy has granted some of the Holy See's properties extraterritoriality. Of them, at least San Giovianni in Laterano and the Campo Santo Teutonico were visited.
- ^ Kosovo is diplomatically recognized as independent by Germany; there are also diplomatic relations.
- ^ Transnistria is recognized as independent by a number of non-United Nations member states. Some of them are, however, recognized as independent by some United Nations member states.
- ^ Palestine is recognized as independent by a number of United Nations member states without being one itself. It does not fully control much of the territory it claims.
- ^ The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized as independent by one United Nations member state, Turkey.
- ^ The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is recognized by a number of United Nations member states as a sovereign entity which is not a state. The Republic of Italy has granted the Order's headquarters extraterritoriality. One of those headquarters, Palazzo Malta, was shortly visited on the date given.
- ^ The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is recognized as independent by a number of United Nations member states. It does not fully control much of the territory it claims. The 2016 trip was in the Moroccan-occupied territory.
- ^ The Republic of China is recognized as independent by a number of United Nations member states without being one itself. It does not fully control much of the territory it claims.
- ^ The Republic of Abkhazia is recognized as independent by a number of United Nations member states without being one itself.
Transit issues
[edit]- ^ Planes were changed at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on November 3, 2024 on the way from the United Arab Emirates to Switzerland. No formal entry took place.
- ^ Planes were changed at Belgrade Airport:
* on June 23/24 and July 1, 2018 on the way from Germany to Russia and back,
* on September 19, 2021 on the way from Turkey to Switzerland,
* on July 8, 2024 on the way from Croatia to Switzerland,
* on September 25, 2024 on the way from Germany to Albania.
No formal entry took place in either case. - ^ a b The United Arab Emirates was visited during change of flights on the way to India on March 28-29, 2009. As there was no passport control on the way to India, the stay in the United Arab Emirates is not considered an entry according to my rules. On the way back, the country was entered on the date given.
- ^ During travel from Yerevan to Artsakh and back on May 28 and 30, 2013, the Azerbaijani territory of Kərki (Armenian: Tigranashen) was crossed. This territory was also crossed on the way from Khor Virap to Lake Sevan on March 29, 2024. Additionally, on March 30, 2024, territory in northwestern Azerbaijan that is occupied by Armenia was visited during travel from Yerevan to Bagratashen. As these territories are under the firm control of Armenia, no formal entry into Azerbaijan is recorded here. The same was true for the territories of Artsakh and adjoining territories under control of Artsakh or Armenia until Artsakh was dismantled in 2024 and became part of Azerbaijan for the purposes of this list.
- ^ During travel around the Sea of Galilee on June 9, 2018, territories which arguably belong to Syria were entered, namely areas of the Golan. As those territories are under the firm control of Israel, no formal entry into Syria is recorded here.
- ^ On April 17, 2017, planes were changed in Cairo Airport on the way from Sudan to Germany. No formal entry took place.
- ^ a b Ethiopia was visited during change of flights on the way to Zimbabwe on June 11, 2010. As there was no passport control on the way to Zimbabwe, that stay in Ethiopia is not considered an entry according to my rules. On the way back, the country was entered on the date given.
- ^ On September 3 and 17/18, 2016, planes were changed in Addis Ababa Airport on the way to Zambia and from South Africa. On March 18 and March 25/26, 2017, planes were changed again in Addis Ababa Airport on the way to Ghana and from Ivory Coast. On May 22 and 28, 2022, planes were changed in Addis Ababa Airport on the way to and from the Seychelles. In neither case a formal entry took place.
- ^ During travel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv on June 11, 2018 and during travel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and back on April 30, 2023, territories which arguably belong to the State of Palestine were entered, namely a corridor of the Israeli Highway 1 near Mevo Horon (in 2018) and the train line between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (in 2023) as well as East Jerusalem (in 2018 and 2023). As those territories are under the firm control of Israel, no formal entries into Palestine are recorded here.
- ^ On January 1, 2020, planes were changed in Amman Airport on the way from Saudi Arabia to Germany. No formal entry took place.
- ^ On September 29 and October 3, 2016, planes were changed in Muscat Airport on the way to and from Sri Lanka. On August 27 and September 4/5, 2017 planes were changed in Muscat Airport on the way to and from Thailand. In neither case a formal entry took place.
- ^ On July 14 and August 6, 2023, planes were changed in Bahrain Airport on the way to and from Singapore. A formal entry did not take place.
- ^ On May 17/18 and June 5, 2015, planes were changed in Doha Airport on the way to and from Singapore. No formal entry took place.
- ^ a b Kuwait was visited during change of flights on the way to and from Pakistan on March 4 and 19, 2010. As there was no passport control on the way to and from Pakistan, that stay in Kuwait is not considered an entry according to my rules. Almost five years later, the country was entered on the date given.
- ^ a b Zambia was visited during a refueling stop on the way from Zimbabwe to Ethiopia on June 18, 2010. As there was no passport control on the way from Zimbabwe to Ethiopia, that stay in Zambia is not considered an entry according to my rules. At that point, Zambia became the third country visited in transit only. On June 18, 2010, hours after the transit in Zambia, Ethiopia was entered properly. Thus, Zambia became the new number 2 on this list. Upon visiting Kuwait on February 26, 2015, Zambia became the only country visited in transit only. Afterwards, on September 3, 2016 Zambia was finally visited according to the rules.
- ^ a b On October 1/2, 2017 a refueling stop took place in Accra Airport on the way from Togo to Portugal. On September 21, 2019, planes were changed in Accra Airport on the way from Sierra Leone to São Tomé and Príncipe. In neither case a formal entry took place.
- ^ On August 4, 2023, planes were changed in Manila Airport on the way from Australia to Singapore. A formal entry did not take place.
- ^ a b Saudi Arabia was visited during change of flights on the way to and from Indonesia on September 21/22 and September 29/30, 2018. As there was no passport control on the way from Germany to Indonesia and back, that stay in Saudi Arabia is not considered an entry according to my rules. Saudi Arabia thus became the only country visited only in transit at this point in time. Saudi Arabia was properly visited from December 29, 2019 to January 1, 2020.
- ^ a b c Sint Maarten, a land of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was visited in transit on May 12, 2023 during a stop-over on the way from the Netherlands to Trinidad and Tobago. As the plane was not left, that stay in Sint Maarten is not considered an entry according to my rules. During a Caribbean cruise, a formal visit took place on March 19, 2024.
Other explanations
[edit]- ^ This provision was changed on June 4, 2019 with retroactive effect to reflect the formal entries into Peru and Brazil which took place on May 31, 2019. In both cases, entry (and exit) controls were generally ignored for short trips across the border.
- ^ This provision was changed with prospective effect on February 25, 2024 to avoid "entering" countries without having a solid connection, i.e. on ships.
- ^ Clarification as of March 19, 2017: "Legally" includes unorthodox ways of obtaining any entry stamps necessary for exiting a country.
- ^ This provision was changed on May 28, 2015 with retroactive effect to reflect the formal entry into Malaysia which took place on May 27, 2015 while the first touching of Malaysian soil took place only on May 28, 2015 when leaving the train. Applying this provision retroactively does not change any dates of first entry apart from that for Malaysia.
- ^ Changed from "physical" on February 25, 2024 to account for travel on ships
- ^ Clarified as of November 2, 2024 before flying from Dhaka to Chittagong after having passed exit immigration in Dhaka on the way to Dubai.
- ^ The next timer-resetting scheduled crossings are due to take place on
November 30 ( Germany → Switzerland)
December 1 ( Hungary → Turkey). - ^ Days to be taken off from the available annual leave; not including public holidays or bridge days
- ^ a b c d e f g h Due to the fact that these countries were visited quite early in my life, exact dates cannot always be given. Even the dates given should be considered with caution as should be the order of Belgium and the Netherlands and the entry into Liechtenstein in 1983.
- ^ a b c d Given the relative proximity to the area where I grew up an earlier entry cannot be ruled out.
- ^ Until 2019 and thus including during the first visit, the constitutional name of the country was "Macedonia".
- ^ Travel on the Mein Schiff 4 which sails under the flag of Malta took place from March 8 to 22, 2024. During that time, the Mein Schiff 4 at times sailed in international waters not adjacent to Malta. While in international waters, the ship was under the jurisdiction of Malta according to international law. An entry into Malta itself did not take place during the trip in the Caribbean.
- ^ a b c Europe in its political sense is determined as all the member states of the Council of Europe plus all countries that are European without doubt (e. g. Belarus). Territories in the vicinity of Europe that can be considered European from a traveller's perspective (e.g., territories that are included in the Schengen Area) count as European.
- ^ Transits are only shown if the transit was the first visit at all to that country.
- ^ One visit to the United States was to American Samoa which is located in Oceania.
- ^ a b The notion of westernmost or easternmost points only makes sense until I have made a trip around the world.
- ^ The Dead Sea shore is the set of lowest points on the Earth surface not covered by water or ice.
- ^ a b c d e f g h The United Kingdom was visited according to the rules of this list when Gibraltar was visited in 1998. The United Kingdom proper was not visited until 2006.
- ^ At the time of the visit (2016), the Gambia was not a Commonwealth member state. The Gambia had left the Commonwealth on October 3, 2013 and rejoined on February 8, 2018.
