The College Football Data Warehouse indicates the first season of Ohio State Football was in 1889, with coach Lilley and an 1-0 record. Ohio State does not acknowledge this season.
Ohio State indicates that David F. Edwards was head coach in 1898, while the College Football Data Warehouse lists the head coach as Jack Ryder. Since Texas officially claims Edwards as their coach in 1898, he was likely listed in error in the Ohio State record.
The results by year section has Ohio State in 7th place in the Big Ten in 1988. Later in the guide, and from other sources, Ohio State is listed as tied for 7th. The results by year section is likely incorrect in this instance.
Conference Affiliation
Ohio State was an independent from its first season until 1902. Ohio State, along with five other schools, created the Ohio Athletic Association (OAC) in 1902 during the football season. The OAC considers the 1902 season its first official football season and awarded a conference champion at the end (Case). Therefore, Ohio State was in the OAC for football from the 1902 season to the 1912 season. Ohio State joined the Big Ten in 1912 and first played in the conference in 1913. Ohio State has remained in the Big Ten ever since.
Ohio State's conference records during its time in the OAC are not included in the Spring Football Media Guide.
Conference standings in the OAC for the 1907 season through the 1910 season cannot be found or determined due to incomplete records.
Ohio State does not claim a conference title in 1906 or 1912.
National championships indicated in the table are only those claimed by the Ohio State. These include 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1986, 1970, and 2002. The 1961 and 1970 championships are not recognized by all or most selectors. Ohio State does not recognize championships from the years 1933, 1944, 1969, 1973, 1974, and 1975 despite declarations from some selectors.
