From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Stargate television shows, the Ancient Technology Activation or ATA gene is a specific set of genetic codons present in the DNA of the Ancients. The Ancients used the ATA as a "genetic key", so only Ancients can operate their technology. Humans possessing the ATA gene are also able to interact with Ancient technology.

Dr. Carson Beckett of Stargate: Atlantis is the discoverer and a human carrier of the Ancient Technology Activation gene.

In "Hide and Seek", Dr. Beckett creates the Tau'ri Gene Therapy, or ATA Gene Therapy, retroviral therapy that splices the ATA gene into normal human DNA with a 48 percent success rate.[1]

Dr. Rodney McKay asks why they haven't done ATA Gene Therapy before, to which Beckett simply responds that it is legal in the Pegasus Galaxy.

McKay volunteers to be the first human trial. The treatment was successful. It has since enabled McKay not only to further his research on Ancient technology, but also to pilot Ancient Puddle Jumpers.
