The San Antonio Steers were a professional indoor football team established in 2007 as a member of the National Indoor Football League's Pacific South Division. As one of several league-owned franchises, the Steers played a short season due league's financial issues, ultimately placing second in their division.

History[edit]

The Steers were founded in late 2006 as a league-owned team and shared the league's financial issues, leading to equipment, uniform, and venue problems and the resignation of original head coach Will Hanna.[1] The team was initially founded as the "San Antonio Player Haters" before switching to the "Steers" branding before the start of the 2007 season.[2][3]

The NIFL struggled for stability in 2007 with more than half of its franchises not reaching the end of the season, forcing San Antonio to play a drastically shortened schedule.[4] With the Dallas franchise failing to launch and the Fort Worth Sixers collapsing, only the Beaumont Drillers remained as viable Texas-based NIFL opponents.[5][6][7] The Steers finished second in the three-team Pacific South Division, behind Beaumont, for the 2007 NIFL season.[8]

After the NIFL collapsed prior to the 2008 season, the core of the team migrated to the Independent Indoor Football Alliance under the name "Texas Rough Riders" before moving on to the American Professional Football League.[9]

Players[edit]

Select members of the Steers franchise were included in the 2007 NIFL trading card set. The set included head coach Mark Ricker, quarterback Bo Buescher, defensive bacj Garyle Graham, and defensive back Michael Ward.

Before joining the Steers, several players gained experience in other leagues. Hallart Keaton played for the Lincoln Lightning of the original Indoor Football League. Garyle Graham and Michael Ward played for the Laredo Lobos of AF2. After his San Antonio Steers tenure, Kelly Hancock played for the Austin Turfcats of the Southern Indoor Football League.
