Digital Bangladesh refers to ensuring the use of information and communication technology in every sector of the country. The main point of the Digital Bangladesh concept is to use all kinds of technology to provide education, health, employment and poverty alleviation in the country. The current government has adopted a plan to build a digital Bangladesh by 2021.To implement the Digital Bangladesh vision, the government has given importance to four specific issues, namely: human resource development, people's involvement, civil service and use of information technology in daily life.

The word 'Digital Bangladesh' first appeared in 2008. On December 12, 2008, in the Bangladesh Awami League's election manifesto, then-opposition leader and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated that "Bangladesh will become 'Digital Bangladesh' in 2021, 50 years after independence", with the main goal of this plan being a developed country, a prosperous digital society. , the digital age population, transformed production systems, the new knowledge-based economy – above all building a knowledge- and technology-based nation. The 'Bangladesh Computer Association' organized the first summit on 'Digital Bangladesh Summit' from 12th to 17th November 2009 to discuss the establishment and priorities of Digital Bangladesh. And since then, various government and private programs have been adopted in this regard

Progress and achievements

  • 18 thousand 975 km till June 2019. Installation of optical fiber cables, installation of WiFi routers up to 2 thousand 4 unions and 1 thousand 483 unions connected to network monitoring system.
  • At present, the information and guidelines of the Bangladesh government are being delivered directly to the people through websites or web portals. Currently the national web portal of Bangladesh government is www.bangladesh.gov.bd.
  • Several government mobile help desks have been created in the country to spread government services and information to remote areas of Bangladesh. People can easily get government information and services by calling the designated numbers of these mobile helpdesks. All these numbers are under toll free service. Currently there are several such government hotline numbers in Bangladesh.

  • Currently, the number of mobile phone users in Bangladesh is around 18 crores. As a result, any special government announcement is being delivered directly to those individuals and their families through mobile phone short messages.
  • At present, citizens of Bangladesh can apply online and collect certified copies of various deeds related to land and land from e-service centers established in 64 districts of the country.
  • Sugarcane supply permits or supplies to sugar mills have been automated and farmers are now getting their supplies on mobile.
  • Due to the wide spread of online shopping and e-commerce concept in Bangladesh numerous e-commerce sites have been developed.
  • An e-book platform has been created by the government for students to easily access textbooks of all classes online. It contains 300 textbooks and 100 reference books.
  • As a result of widespread internet connectivity in the field of education, various online educational platforms have been developed in the country. For example 'Robi 10 Minutes School', '10 Minutes School'.
  • To ensure healthcare to the citizens, the government has set up 'Telemedicine Service Centers' at various places. Arrangements have been made to send any information or complaints about the management of government hospitals through mobile phones or SMS.
  • Income tax payers can now calculate income tax and prepare and file returns from home.
  • Sending money from one place to another has become relatively easier and faster nowadays through postal cash cards, mobile banking, electronic money transfer systems etc. Money can also be transferred through internet and online banking. Some of the popular mobile banking services in Bangladesh at present are - Bkash, Rocket, T-Cash, Nagad, City Touch, Upay, Easy Cash.
  • Currently, customers can pay electricity, water and gas bills online or via mobile phone.
  • Publish the results of all public examinations; Applications for admission to schools, colleges and universities; registration of examinations; Job applications; birth registration; Information technology is being used in business registration etc.
  • Currently, almost all train, bus and plane tickets can be purchased online or on mobile.
  • A special web portal called 'e-tender' is currently being used to appoint tenders for major development works of the government, which has significantly reduced corruption in these works.
  • Bangladesh's first artificial satellite 'Bangabandhu Satellite-1' was sent into space on May 12, 2018.
  • As the 9th country in the world, 5G internet was launched experimentally on December 12, 2021.
  • 02 February 2022 Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) signed an agreement with the Russian company Glavkosmos to build and launch Bangabandhu 2, the 2nd artificial satellite of Bangladesh.
  • Country's first Bengali language based browser 'Duranta' started its journey on 28 February 2021.
  • 1 December 2020 Cabinet approves project to lay third submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-6.
