Biography

Coming from an old family of master weavers of Lodeve, he enlists himself in 1792, at 22 years old, as second lieutenant in the 13th line infantry regiment and serves successively in the armies of the Rhine, of the Moselle (headquartered in Mainz), as well as in the army of Sambre and Meuse. Made captain in 1796, he is assigned to the Army of Italy, and then to the Army of the Orient. He is wounded during the Egyptian campaign, after which he is appointed battalion commander by general Kléber. He then serves in the Grande Armée; his courage is noted during the Battle of Austerlitz where he is wounded in the right arm. Made colonel in 1807, he is made baron of the Empire in 1808 and is assigned to Spanish Army. Lastly, made brigadier general in 1813, he is appointed to the Imperial Guard, then to the Grande Armée and takes part in the campaigns of Germany and of France. Retired in 1814, he served again during the Hundred Days and is wounded in the chest during the Namur retreat in 1815. He had married, on Febuary the 1st of 1814, Mayence Aglaée, Augustine, Marie Schaal, daughter of the general François Ignace Schaal.

  • 1792: Second lieutenant in the 13th Infantry Regiment (July 30); to the Army of the Rhine (1792-1793), then to the Army of the Moselle (1793-1794), then to the Army of Sambre-et-Meuse (July 2, 1794-1796).
  • 1795: Lieutenant (March 21) in the 26th Demi-brigade; deputy to the Adjutant-General Escale (May 20).
  • 1796: Captain (November 21); to the Army of Italy (1796-1798).
  • 1798: To the armée d'Orient (1798-1801); served in the defense of Kosseïr (August 14-16, 1799), wounded during the expedition to Upper Egypt (1800).
  • 1800: Appointed provisional battalion commander (June 12) by Kléber; aide-de-camp to General Charles Antoine Morand (November 28, 1800 - March 28, 1808).
  • 1802: Confirmed by decree of the Consuls in the rank of battalion commander (February 28).
  • 1803: To the Ocean Coast Army (1803-1805), at the Saint-Omer camp.
  • 1805: At the Grande Armée (1805-1808); to the staff of the 1st Infantry Division of the 1st Brigade (Morand) of the 4th Corps (Soult) of the Grande Armée (September 25); wounded in the right arm at the Battle of Austerlitz (December 2).
  • 1806: To the 1st Infantry Division of the 3rd Corps (Davout) of the Grande Armée (March).
  • 1807: Colonel (March 4); commands the 21st Light Infantry Regiment (March 28) of the Gazan division in the 5th corps of the Grande Armée.
  • 1808: Baron of the Empire by letters patent of October 26, 1808 (baron Lagarde); to the Army of Spain (1808-1813).
  • 1811: Wounded at the Battle of Albuhera (May 16).
  • 1813: Brigadier General (May 30); to the 4th Division of the 2nd Young Guard Corps (Mortar) of the Imperial Guard (June 4); serves in Saxony; commands the 1st brigade of the 51st infantry division of the observation corps in Bavaria (9th corps, Augereau) of the Grande Armée (July 20), then passes to the 4th corps of the Grande Armée and takes part in the defense of Mainz (November 7).
  • 1814: Decommissioned (September 1); Chevalier de Saint-Louis (October 11).
  • 1815: Commander of the Legion of Honor; commands the 2nd Brigade of the 11th Infantry Division of the 3rd Corps of the Armée du Nord (April 20); wounded in the chest in Namur (June 20); decommissioned (September 14).
  • 1816: Title of hereditary baron confirmed by Louis XVIII (baron de Lagarde).
  • 1818: Included as available as part of the General Staff of the Army (December 30).
