Robert (Bob) Hanson (born Birmingham, 24 October 1948) is a British composer.
Biography
[edit]Robert Hanson was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Southampton University, obtaining his PhD (an analytical study of Webern) in 1976. After a period of freelance work, he joined the staff of Dartington College of Arts in 1974. From 1983 he was in charge of the undergraduate music there, becoming Acting Head of Music in 1990. In 1991 he became Director of Music at Morley College, leaving this post in 2007 in order to pursue a freelance career.
His music draws on many sources whilst speaking with a highly personal voice.
Hanson's output includes chamber works for piano, guitar, oboe, violin, viola and mixed ensembles; works for string orchestra and string quartet, and major pieces for both soprano and clarinet with orchestra. More recently he turned his attention to sacred choral music, including a forty-part motet using the same vocal forces as Tallis' Spem in Alium, but with the addition of brass.
Later works have delved into the plainsong roots of Western music. in 2008 he collaborated with a jazz quartet to produce Reconnection, which was performed at the Southbank Centre in London.
