The 1893-94 season was Sunderland's 14th season in existence, and their 4th season as a Football League club.

Sunderland weren't able to make it three league titles in a row, instead finishing second to Aston Villa who claimed their first title. Sunderland had a sluggish start to the season, winning only one of their first six games. This run included a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Everton in front of a crowd of 27,500 at Goodison Park - the highest league attendance in the division that season. It was Sunderland's biggest defeat since turning professional. By mid-October they sat in 14th position in the table. They began to rally in the second half of the season - including a 6 game winning run through January and February - and by March were had moved in second spot where they would stay for the remainder of the season.

A 2-3 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers on 9 December 1893 was the only league defeat Sunderland supporters would witness at Newcastle Road in over 80 games between 15 September 1890 and 1 September 1896.
