Purev Otgon

Otgon Purev (born February 18, 1931, in Renchinlkhumbe, Khuvsgul Province) was a Mongolian historian, doctor of historical sciences, professor, and researcher.

He was a prominent scholar in the study of Damdin Sukhbaatar. He also contributed to the study of Mongolia’s traditional shamanic practices. He helped establish historical geography as a science in Mongolia and conducted extensive research on the history of Ulaanbaatar. His books, works, and maps continue to be used in teaching and research today.

Biography

In 1991, he successfully defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences with the topic “Some Issues in the Study of Damdin Sukhbaatar” (using historical geography methods). In 2003, he earned his Doctor of Historical Sciences degree with the topic “Historical Geography of Early 20th Century Mongolia.” He taught as a professor at the National University of Mongolia, Mongolian State University of Education, and Ulaanbaatar University. He authored 10 monographs, compiled 12 document collections, published 140 academic and simplified articles, created 140 maps and models, and presented 23 research papers.

In recognition of his contributions, Khar Darkhad O. Purev was awarded the 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, and 80th Anniversary Medals of the People’s Revolution, the title and badge of “Honorary Citizen of Ulaanbaatar”, the title of “Leading Worker in Public Education”, the Labor Honor Medal, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor Merit, and the title of “Honored Scientist of Mongolia.
