Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Mo Willems. Released by Disney-Hyperion in 2003, it was Willems' first book for children, and it received a Caldecott Honor in 2004 for distinguished American Children's Picture Books.[1] An animated adaptation of the book won the 2010 Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video.[2]
Plot[edit]
The book begins with a pigeon imagining himself driving a bus. As we turn the page we find the bus driver who asks the reader to watch his bus for a while until he gets back. The Bus Driver also asks the reader not to let the pigeon drive the bus. Aimed for readers ages 2 to 6 years old, the interactive pages of the book prompt the reader to dialogue with the pigeon as he begs for a chance to drive the bus. Pleading and bribing have children at the ready to yell "NO" at the pigeon.

Reception[edit]
"A brilliantly simple book that is absolutely true to life, as anyone who interacts with an obdurate three-year-old can attest." - School Library Journal[4]
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! was an American Library Association Notable Book, a National Council of Teachers of English Notable Book, and a Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Blue Ribbon Book.[5] Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children."[6] It was one of the "Top 100 Picture Books" of all time in a 2012 poll by School Library Journal.[7]
