Dana Schechter is an American musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist.

Music credits as a touring and recording musician include M. Gira’s Angels of Light, Swans, Insect Ark, Bee and Flower, Zeal and Ardor, Wrekmeister Harmonies, Locrian, Gnaw, Bertrand Burgalat, April MarchBotanica, Tarnation, Keren Ann, and more. Schechter also works as a professional computer animator and designer for film, TV and commercials. Her early visual work was as an oil painter and printmaker.

A native of San Francisco, CA., Dana Schechter grew up in the Haight Ashbury district, and started playing music at age 9. During her teens, she was part of the metal community / Bay Area Thrash Metal scene, and starting playing bass guitar as a tribute to her friend Cliff Burton (Metallica) after he was killed in a bus accident on tour. Early bands as a bassist include Mud Puppies, Gifthorse (with Doug Hilsinger and Jef Whitehead of Leviathan), and her first project as a singer, Worry Dolls.

Largely self-taught, in the late 1990’s she learned singing, guitar, piano and drums, composing, and made the first demos of her own songs. She moved to New York City in 1997 to pursue her music and animation careers, and in 1999 joined M. Gira’s Angels of Light. In 1999 she formed her first band of her own songwriting and leader, Bee and Flower, releasing their debut “What’s Mine Is Yours” on Neurot Recordings in 2003. She relocated to Berlin, Germany from 2004-2008. Bee and Flower went on a non-official hiatus in 2013 after the release of 2012 album “Suspension”.

In the fall of 2011, Dana started an instrumental solo project, Insect Ark, using lap steel guitar, bass, synthesizers, programmed drums, using live looping and stacking of layers of dark, distorted, saturated sound. The first full LP, “Portal/Well” was released in 2012 on Autumnsongs Records.  In 2015, Portland Oregon drummer and synth artist Ashley Spungin (Taurus, Ormus) joined the band. The duo recorded and released 2018’s “Marrow Hymns” on Profound Lore Records. In 2019, Spungin and Schechter parted ways, and drummer Andy Patterson (SubRosa, GONE) joined the band. They recorded and released 2020’s “The Vanishing” Profound Lore Records.

In 2020 Dana recorded with Swans on the new album “Leaving Meaning”, and was slated to join the band, but all tours were cancelled due to COVID 19.
