Wołosi are a Polish ethnographic group living in Cieszyn Silesia, around the towns of Cieszyn and Skoczów,[1], to south east from Silesian Lachs group.[2] The name, similar to Vlachs (Polish: Wołosi), is probably not directly associated with that group but is derived from the nickname given to them by their neighbour groups.[3]

Wałasi dwell on Silesian Foothils and north-western slopes of Silesian Beskids[3] in the watershed of Vistula and Olza rivers, within Cieszyn Silesia.[4] To the north of Wałasi lives Polish Silesian Lachs group, to the west Czech Lachs, to the east Polish repatriants in Bielsko-Biała (preceded by Germans), and Silesian Gorals to the south.[5].

The ethnographic area is not associated with language borders as Wałasi live further to the west.[2] Furthermore Silesian Wałasi are subdivided into two groups: more populous in the east (around Cieszyn), and less populous in the west (east from Frýdek, exclusively in the Zaolzie region, that was overwhelmed by Czech people.[5].

Jan Stanisław Bystroń stated that Wałasi are descendats of the mountainous Vlachs.[2] Currently Wałasi are acknowledged as a Gorals-scioned group that settled foothills. Characteristic distinctiveness of this group connects its traits with Gorals.[5]

Wałasi traditionally wear Cieszyn folk costume, locally known also as wałaski.[1]
