Theta Xi (ΘΞ) was founded at the first professional fraternity, restricting its membership to engineering students, but opened membership to all college men in 1926. The fraternity was founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York on 29 April 1864, by Peter H. Fox, Ralph G. Packard, Christopher C. Waite, George B. Brainerd, Samuel Buel Jr., Henry H. Farnum, Thomas C. Raymond and Nathaniel H. Starbuck. Theta Xi opened a Beta chapter at the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut within a year and was present on four campuses by the close of the nineteenth century. Since 1864, Theta Xi has initiated over 60,000 men into its brotherhood and today, there are over fifty Theta Xi Chapters and Colonies across the United States.
In 1962, Theta Xi merged with Kappa Sigma Kappa Fraternity, adding twenty-one new chapters to its' roll. As a part of the merger, the new chapters were given Greek-letter designations beginning with Kappa and the Theta Xi Coat of Arms was altered to reflect the symbols of Kappa Sigma Kappa.
