James Shepherd is regarded by some as the greatest cornet player the world has ever heard [1]. He has excelled as both a brass band player, in his unparalleled career as principal cornet player of the world-famous Black Dyke Mills Band during its most successful ever period, and as a soloist, winning the title of Champion Soloist of Great Britain on three consecutive occasions [2]. He held the position of principal cornet player of the Black Dyke Band for 10 years, a position often referred to as "the hottest seat in banding", and has a recording career that spans more than 50 years and which covers a huge repertoire of both popular and classical music. In 1972, he established the James Shepherd Versatile Brass ensemble with which he still performs and tours.
