Qian was born in Zhongqiao, Wuxi. At the start he entered a primary school in Zhongqiao, but his school performance was poor. His father transfered him to other school two times to prevent him from repeating his grade. In 1952, he graduated from Wannianqiao Primary School in Suzhou, and then entered Suzhou No. 2 Middle School. There he was taken good care of by teacher Wang Jinsheng, who was in charge of his class. Wang visited Qian's home several times, in the summer of 1953 Qian was able to pass the retests of three subjects.[1]
