Utah author creates magical nesting dolls in new 'Giver'-like fantasy novel, Michelle Garrett Bulsiewicz, Deseret News ๐[edit]
- Holmberg came up with the idea for The Fifth Doll while "preparing a class on magic systems for the LDStorymakers conference". ๐
- She was planning to task conference attendees with writing systems of magic for various household objects when she found her Russian nesting doll set and came up with a system of magic for them herself.
- She then came up with a plot to go along with her idea.
- Her agent loved the idea, and The Fifth Doll was completed six months later.
- Holmberg has likened her novel to The Village by M. Night Shyamalan and The Giver by Lois Lowry, and cited Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge as an influence.
- Holmberg reported that she "loosely applied some Freudian theory to the layers of the nesting dolls, each subtlety representing the id, the ego and the superego."
- She identifies the novel as in the realm of the fantasy genre, but acknowledges that there are some elements of horror in it.

- Holmberg decided to limit her characters in her The Paper Magician series to be able to manipulate only one man-made material after being taught by Brandon Sanderson that "limits are more interesting than the powers themselves" ๐
