Overview

Nicolas David Velilla(born March 27, 1991)is an American born student that lives in Chapin, South Carolina. He is the youngest of four children. He is currently attending Liberty University, and is training in the U.S Army via ROTC to become an Army Ranger.

Early Years

Nicolas came from a very poor family living in the outskirts of Chapin, South Carolina. When he was born in 1991, the family was living in a run down single wide trailer. The trailer was in bad shape. The air conditioner and heater, when working, could only be turned on for a maximum of one hour each day to save money. The trailer was constantly infested with all sorts of pests, insects, and other creatures. Even the bed that Nicolas and his brothers slept on had mice and roaches living inside of it. Nicolas and his three older brothers Micah, Joshua, and Ricky, all shared one 6x8 foot room. The four of them all shared one dresser, and one twin size bed. Any toys, clothes, or possessions the boys had were usually given to them from friends and family. The family was also constantly on the brink of starvation. A single box of generic macaroni and cheese fed the family for the entire day. Nicolas' father was, at the time, beginning to grow his own construction business, but money was short and times were tough for the entire family. As his business grew however, the financial status of the family began to improve. In 1998, Nicolas and his family moved out of their impoverished environment into a house that his father built.

Writing Career

As Nicolas progressed in school, he began to discover a love for writing. He started his first journal when was 10 years old, which included normal entries, prayers, and self written song lyrics and poems. Around the time when he got into middle school, Nicolas began writing short stories; some of these stories are still saved. He began to explore into a more comedic genre of writing when he began writing a series of fictional short stories about "Charlie Sanchez". Charlie, a clumsy, dorky, young teenager became the cornerstone upon which Nicolas built his writing skills upon. Through stories such as "Charlie Goes to China" and "Charlie and the Three Legged Mexican", Nicolas began to improve on his writing skills and began to become a first class writer. By the time he was in high school, his writing skills had matured, and he began writing multiple works at once; sometimes writing as many as four at a time, each with differing plots and characters. The number of full length 20,000+ word fictions that he had written by age 16 are estimated to be between 15-20.

"Definitions"

Nicolas was inspired by his close friends to begin writing his first major work. After much thought and further inspiration, he began writing the novel "Definitions". The novel, which has characters that were directly inspired by people and events in Nicolas' life, is a perfect example of his writing maturity. The novel is a fast paced action/adventure fiction, that combines edge-of-your-seat cliffhangers to comedic relief, and even delves into the romantic genre. The work is over 60,000 words long. Nicolas has said about the work: "I can't believe i wrote it. I keep reading what i'm writing and saying 'wow, did i write that? that's really good!'". The final copy of the novel will even include a "deleted scenes" section, where he explains certain story gaps, reveals extra plot twists that were left out, and also gives author commentaries on certain characters and sections of the novel.

Personal Life

The most defining thing about Nicolas, is that he is a devout Christian. His work in the church, and missions will always define who he is. He was raised up in the church since he was a small child, and has continued to work in the church doing missions, and other church activities his entire life. Activities such as AWANA when he was younger, and youth ministry and missions trips in middle school and high school. As an AWANA student, he was nicknamed "the general" for the immense amount of bars and awards on his uniform that he had earned mainly through scripture memorization. By the time he graduated the program, he had memorized 500+ Bible verses. Nicolas identifies his ability to memorize massive amounts of scripture as the key aspect of his walk. During high school, one of Nicolas' defining traits was his interactions with girls. All of his best friends throughout his life, from elementary school till high school, were all been girls. It was a rarity to ever see him around a group of guys. During those years however, Nicolas was constantly involved in multiple, controversial situations, giving him a rebellious reputation. His rebelliousness has carried with him into his college years, and his tendency to "circumvent boundaries" has gotten him in trouble on numerous occasions, including several conflicts with law enforcement, though he was never charged. Nicolas has never described himself as an academically smart person, but his transcript and college GPA seem to disagree. As a child, and during his early years, Nicolas showed great academic potential, always working several grades upon his own level. As high school hit however, he developed a distaste for academia, failing to apply himself in his work. He would bounce back however, in an attempt to have high enough scores to earn an Army scholarship. In his senior year, he was triple-enrolled in three different schools: high school, Midlands Technical College, and Liberty University. His hard worked paid off, and upon graduation he was invited into the National Society for High School Scholars, and was offered 4-year full tuition scholarships from multiple universities, including Auburn University and Liberty University. On February 7, 2011, Nicolas entered into his first official relationship, asking out Jennifer Allen, a fellow student and former roommate to his best friend. Nicolas describes Jennifer as the the most amazing woman he's ever met.

Martial Arts

From his entrance into martial arts training, his instructors noted him as an extraordinary talent. He moved quickly from white belt, often skipping ranks, and consistently trained with the advanced fighters. On October 4, 2008, Nicolas earned the rank of First Dan(black belt) in Tang Soo Do. Nicolas has competed in several local and regional tournaments, never placing lower then second place. He has won 6 gold medals and 2 silver medals, each in multiple divisions. He formerly trained at Chapin Martial Arts at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin, SC, and is hailed by his instructors and fellow students as not only the school's best student, but one of the best students in the region. After receiving his black belt he began the instructor certification program in an attempt to become on of the youngest dan members to own his own studio, but high school graduation kept him from completing it. Since then he has been training mainly in Mixed Martial Arts. His training led to his first cage fight in Lynchburg, Virgina. The fight was not evenly matched, as he was placed against an undefeated title holding fighter. He would lose the bout in the 3rd round to his much heavier, more experienced opponent, giving him an overall MMA record of 0-1.

Tragedy

Nicolas' life has often been defined by tragedy, and in May of 2011, he faced his worst yet. While on vacation in Puerto Rico to visit family, Nicolas and his family visited Cueva del Indio. On May 14, 2011, while sitting on a cliff face enjoying the spray of the tossing water, a stray wave unexpectedly came across the top of the cliff sweeping away Nicolas' father, who smashed his head on a rock and subsequently drowned in the waters below. The death of his father has been a major influence in his life.

Future Life

Nicolas is currently attending Liberty University where he is pursuing a degree in History. He is also enrolled into their Army ROTC program to pursue a career in the military. His aspiration is to become either a Special Forces officer, or to become an Army Ranger. Though he never sees himself leaving the Army until he retires, he has previously stated that he would switch jobs for the sake of his family. In August of 2011 Nicolas will attend Army Air Assault School.
