Christopher Stanley Ogilvy[edit]

Christopher Stanley Ogilvy is an American neurosurgeon and researcher. Ogilvy practices neurological surgery and serves as the director of the Brain Aneurysm Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.[1] Ogilvy has taught and mentored aspiring neurosurgeons at Harvard Medical School, where he has held faculty appointments since 1991. In 1994, Ogilvy and nurse practitioner Deidre Buckley co-founded the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.[2] This is the nation's foremost nonprofit organization dedicated to providing awareness, education, support, and research funding for intracranial aneurysms.

Over the years, Ogilvy has earned recognition for his dedication to excellence in patient care, education, teaching, and passion for research, establishing himself as a leader in american neurosurgery. Ogilvy has been actively engaged in professional societies and committees both locally, nationally, and worldwide. Ogilvy has led multi-institutional registries, clinical trials, and courses and has participated in the development of a variety of clinical guidelines.

Academic Career[edit]

Ogilvy pursued his undergraduate studies at Yale University, graduating Magna cum laude in Biology in 1980. He earned his M.D. degree at Dartmouth Medical School in 1984 with Honors, and he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Ogilvy completed his internship year in General Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, in 1985, residency training in Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1985 to 1991, and fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery at the University of Buffalo from 2008 to 2009.

Ogilvy has held various faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School. He started as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1991, progressing to become a Professor in 2003 (the youngest full professor in Neurosurgery to date).[3] Ogilvy has also held a variety of clinical administration positions at different institutions across the country. He has been the Director of the National Brain Aneurysm Foundation Medical Advisory Board from 1994 onwards. From 1993 to 2009, Ogilvy served as the Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). At MGH, Ogilvy held various leadership roles, including Co-Director of the MGH Brain Aneurysm/AVM Center, and transitioned to Director of Endovascular and Operative Neurovascular Surgery from 2009 to 2013. In 2013, Ogilvy became the Director of Endovascular and Operative Neurovascular Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Along with his clinical leadership, Ogilvy has been actively involved in education at all levels: Medical School, Residency training, Fellowship training and teaching of peers by organizing, and directing numerous courses and symposia aimed at advancing knowledge and practice in neruovascular medicine. These courses covered areas such as stroke management, cerebrovascular emergencies, and neurovascular updates. Notable among them were the "Cerebral Aneurysms and Vascular Malformations" course at Harvard Medical School, which he co-directed from 1994 to 1998, and the "Minutes Count: Update on New Techniques and Review of Established Principles of Management of Cerebrovascular Emergencies" course, which he directed from1999-2004, and the “Ischemic and hemorrhagic update: current practices and future directions” which he has co-directed since 2005.[4] In 2021, Ogilvy became the fellowship director for Endovascular and Operative Neurovascular Surgery at the BIDMC Brain Aneurysm Institute, affiliated with Harvard Medical School.

Research and Contributions[edit]

Ogilvy has authored over 700 peer-reviewed articles and more than 100 textbook chapters, with research interests spanning clinical and basic laboratory investigations.[5] His clinical research efforts revolve around evaluating outcome measures for patients undergoing procedures for cerebrovascular disorders, including carotid endarterectomy, brain arteriovenous malformations, and intracranial aneurysms. Ogilvy is particularly focused on the development of combined modality management approaches integrating endovascular and surgical techniques to treat neurovascular lesions. Outcomes have been used to change management algorithms, clinical decision-making and redefine practice regionally and nationally.[6][7][8][9]

In the laboratory, Ogilvy's efforts have included the study of neural ischemia using a rabbit retina model as well as exploring tissue engineering techniques for treating saccular intracranial aneurysms.[10] Recent funding has been directed towards research on endothelial progenitor cells in patients treated with flow diversion for intracranial aneurysms.[11] Collaborative efforts with engineering groups have enabled Ogilvy to actively participate in hemodynamic evaluations of intracranial aneurysms through computational flow dynamics simulations.[12]

Over the years, Ogilvy has served as peer reviewer for prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Stroke, Lancet, JAMA Neurology, Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, American Journal of Neuroradiology, Surgical Neurology, Neurology, Acta Neurochirurgica, Journal of Neurology, International Journal of Neuroscience, Interventional Neuroradiology, Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology, Pediatric Neurosurgery, and Frontiers of Neurology. Additionally, he has held various editorial roles, including Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Neurovascular Disease and Editorial Review Board Member for Neurosurgery and World Neurosurgery. Ogilvy plays a key role in maintaining the integrity and quality of scholarly publications in the field of neurosurgery.

Brain Aneurysm Foundation[edit]

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF) was developed in 1994 from a close relationship between patients and healthcare professionals who identified the need for comprehensive information and support for brain aneurysm patients, their families, and the medical community. The BAF is now the globally recognized leader in brain aneurysm awareness, education, support, advocacy, and research funding.[13]

The BAF is the largest private sponsor of brain aneurysm research in the United States.[14] The foundation annually allocates grants to investigators involved in various aspects of research, ranging from fundamental studies to clinical applications and outcomes assessment. The funded projects cover a wide spectrum of vital areas, including the genetics and progression of brain aneurysms, early detection techniques, innovative diagnostic approaches, advancements in both surgical and non-surgical interventions, strategies for preventing and managing complications, exploration of socio-economic implications, and enhancements to the overall quality of life for patients.

Personal Life[edit]

Ogilvy is an enthusiastic participant in stock car racing and antique tractor pulling. With his son, Benjamin Ogilvy, he has constructed decorative wooden ships, which are now curated, framed, and preserved as collections. In addition, he has been involved in wooden boat restoration including a 1959 Chris Craft runabout and a 50 foot 1929 Elco Flat top yacht. Ogilvy has various sets of toy trains in his home, which he invites schools from the local area and children to enjoy and be entertained by them.
