The WIRE (Canisius radio)

[edit]

The WIRE is the premier source of radio at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. It is owned by the college and run by a volunteer staff of students. The current leaders of the station are Nicholas Aldrich of the class of 2010 and Marie Schuster of the class of 2011. The station is advised by a member of the Canisius College faculty, Jamie O'Neil a Digital Media Arts professor and part of the Communication Studies Department at Canisius. They are assisted by five other students in controlling general runnings of the station. The station currently streams live via Live365 an on-line radio service that the radio station pays on a yearly basis.

Station History

[edit]

According to the WIRE's webpage "Founded in the 1969 as WCCG, Canisius College Radio." The WIRE "is one of the older student clubs on campus. It is open to ALL current Canisius students who are interested in learning how to become a DJ. The station is located in the basement of the Student Center SC-014. Currently the station is managed by an executive board of undergraduate students.

WCCG started out as an FM radio station, but lost its license several years ago for not meeting FCC requirements. Since then Canisius College Radio has been broadcasting through the campus television network on channel 10. After parting ways with terrestrial radio, the station lost its voice and was forced to go through a rebuilding phase.

The name of the station was recently changed from WCCG to The WIRE to signify a new beginning for the club. The rebirth of the club as an on line station is a huge step towards restoring the voice of Canisius College Radio. Streaming on the web would not have been possible without the financial assistance of the Canisius Student Senate and the tech support of the Canisius ITS Department."[1]
