Coronation Street is a British soap opera, set in the fictitious Northern town of Weatherfield, Coronation Street takes the viewer into the lives of a colourful variety of characters. The compulsive nature of Coronation Street and the way it evolves and adapts to the taste of its audience, have made it an institution. Coronation Street is the story of working people and the city street in which they live. It is a story of local life and the detail of local life and has been seen around the world in countries as far apart as Finland and Sierra Leone. In the history of television no programme has been as consistently successful as Coronation Street. Coronation Street has remained in the top viewing ratings throughout its long life. The show entered its second year of broadcast on 4 January 1961 with its 8th episode, with Stuart Latham continuing his role as the shows producer until July when the position was taken over by Derek Granger. The typical week of transmission comprised two half-hour episodes on Granada, in the time slot of 7:00 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays until 6 March 1961 when the broadcast pattern was changed to 7:30 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

For the characters in the soap, it's a mixed year. Elsie Tanner's estranged husband turns up after 15 years and asks for a divorce. Elsie has fallen for naval officer Bill Gregory but an anonymous letter threatens the relationship and leads to the first of many fights between her and Ena Sharples. The street sees two weddings, one of which involves barmaid Concepta. Billy Walker leaves for London after refusing to work in his parents' pub. Dennis Tanner is responsible for a chimp called Rupert causing havoc in the Rovers. Ena Sharples manages to get sacked twice by ]]Leonard Swindley]] who has a hint of romance with Emily Nugent. Ken Barlow graduates from university and, after a failed romance, is about to leave Weatherfield for a life down south when tragedy strikes the Barlow family.
