Flatiron Health is a New York-based healthcare data analytics company focusing on oncology patients, their healthcare providers and their data.[1][2] The firm collates structured and unstructured data with electronic medical records and generates real-world evidence data therefrom, an approach not unique to this firm but for its sharp focus on oncology.[1] A key product of the firm is aggregate anonymized data in the oncology treatment realm which it sells to pharmaceutical companies.[2]

One documented strategy of the firm was to have personnel visit oncology specialty clinics and shadow personnel in order to conduct deep elicitation and data producer behavior information.[2]

As of 2017, the firm had a headcount of 25 subject matter experts with some form of a medical degree and 104 specialists in technology and engineering.[2]

In 2017, Roche signaled their intention to acquire Flatiron Health and maintain it as an autonomous subsidiary, retaining all employees;[3] at the time, Roche held a minority stake in the firm.[1] They completed the acquisition in February 2018 for US$1.9 billion, a valuation that was a surprise to many.[1] Roche saw the firm as one lifeline to address their heavy reliance on oncology products for revenue, impending exclusivity expirations of key oncology products, and a large oncology development pipeline.[1]

Flatiron was co-founded by Nat Turner,[2] who was the company's CEO at the time of Roche's 2017 statement of intent to acquire.[3] Roche had in 2015 entered into a deal with Flatiron valued at US$175 million.[3] The company's total fundraising from inception to acquisition was in excess of US$313 million.[3]

With Turner, Zach Weinberg was a co-founding partner, both formerly of Google.[3] They had, in fact, founded the company Invite Media, a firm in the advertising technology space, which was acquired by Google in 2010.[2]
