DNCE (Band)[edit]

DNCE are a L.A.-based electro/pop[1] group consisting of four members.[2] Formed in 2015, the band consists of the former Jonas Brothers' band member, Joe Jonas, as the frontman, guitarist JinJoo Lee, bassist/keyboardist Cole Whittle and former Jonas Brothers' drummer Jack Lawless.[3] Joe Jonas was part of one of the world's biggest boy bands, Jonas Brothers, formed in 2005.[4] He played lead vocal with his brothers, Nick Jonas, and guitarist Kevin Jonas. Before splitting up in 2013, the Jonas Brothers had two No. 1 Billboard 200 albums, 13 Billboard Hot 100 hits and several Disney Channel shows and television movies.[5] Now Joe Jonas is the frontman of the newly formed DNCE.

DNCE's debut single is called "Cake by the Ocean", a dance-rock song which is a collaboration with Swedish producers Mattman & Robin and Justin Tranter of the rock band Semi Precious Weapons. [6] The single premiered on Z100[7] on September 14, 2015, meanwhile their debut EP called SWAAY will be released through Republic Records[8] on October 23, 2015.[9][10] DNCE made their TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on September 29, 2015.[11]

History and Music Career[edit]

Forming of the Band[edit]

Joe Jonas had a vision for a separate band from his brothers for the past five to six years.[12] After parting ways with his former band, Jonas rounded up friends to create DNCE.[13] JinJoo Lee met Jonas on a Jordin Sparks tour in which the Jonas Brothers were the opening act for.[14] Lee played lead guitar for Sparks and later joined Jonas on his tour for his solo album Fastlife in 2011.[15] Similarly, Jonas previously knew Jack Lawless. Lawless played the drums for the Jonas Brothers starting in 2006 after replacing a former drummer for the band. Lawless eventually became the band's full-time drummer.[16] Unlike Lee and Lawless, Jonas met Cole Whittle through a mutual friend; Justin Tranter introduced Jonas to Whittle.[17]

When asked how the band formed, Jonas said: "I called them up, like, ‘Quit the other bands and come hang!"[18] Lawless said of his bandmate, "No matter the situation, Joe’s always searching for fun. What’s the point of being alive if you can’t have as much fun as possible all the time?”[19]

When asked about how the band came up with their name, Jonas said, "The way we came up with the name of the band was a song about being too drunk to spell ‘dance'. Having a good time."[20] Lee further added, "DNCE is ‘dance without an A,’ which is not a perfect word -- but you don’t have to be a perfect dancer to be dancing to our music."[21]

Past Experiences[edit]

Jonas is not the only one with a musical past. Lee played as a guitarist for artists such as Charli XCX, Jordin Sparks, JoJo, Ciara, and Scarlet Fever from 2010-2011.[22] Lawless played drums for the Jonas Brothers and for Demi Lovato's debut album Don't Forget.[23] Whittle played bass for Semi Precious Weapons who toured with artists such as Lady Gaga and Ke$ha.[24]

Cake by the Ocean (2015)[edit]

The idea for "Cake by the Ocean" originated from the concept of sex by the beach. Jonas said, "We were at the studio, and I overheard the producers saying that they wanted to get cake by the ocean."[25] However, Jonas later realized that his Swedish producers misspoke the name of a tropical cocktail; instead of referring to the cocktail Sex by the Beach, they mistakenly said cake by the ocean.[26] Subsequently, Jonas began to write a song around the idea.

The video for "Cake by the Ocean" premiered on EW and features a directorial debut by Gigi Hadid.[27] The video consists of a massive cake on the sand in Huntington Beach, California.[28] The band is performing in the middle of a food fight and men and women are throwing cake at each other.[29] Jonas said of the video, "We were thinking of ideas and turned around and said why not put a massive cake on the beach? It came together really quickly and were really excited about it because it’s just something that I think is wacky and fun.”[30]

Personal Lives[edit]

Joe Jonas[edit]

Joe Jonas was born as Joseph Adam Jonas on August 15, 1989 in Casa Grande, Arizona, USA.[31] He was born to Denise Miller (mother), a teacher and singer, and Paul Kevin Jonas (father), a musician and former ordained minister.[32] Jonas is of German, English, Scottish, Irish, Italian and French-Canadian descent.[33] Besides his career in the Jonas Brothers band, Jonas appeared in guest roles on TV and recently made a name for himself in the fashion world.[34] Jonas plays multiple instruments including the keyboard, guitar and tambourine.[35] His brothers include Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas and Frankie Jonas.[36] He has dated artists Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato in the past.[37] Currently, he is dating Gigi Hadid who directed DNCE's first video, "Cake by the Ocean".

JinJoo Lee[edit]

Lee taught herself to play the guitar at the age of 12.[38] She said, "I was the youngest and grew up watching my siblings make music and put out albums, which seemed so cool to me. At one point they didn't have a guitarist, so I learned all their songs and they let me in. That was my whole teenage life."[39]

Jack Lawless[edit]

Lawless grew up in New Jersey.[40] He played in bands throughout his high school life. Eventually, he dropped out of college during his first semester to replace the drummer who quit the Jonas Brothers' band in 2006.[41] Lawless said, "I'd never rehearsed or anything - I just got on the tour bus, and my first time playing with them was at sound check the next day."[42]

Cole Whittle[edit]

Whittle is a founding member of the band Semi Precious Weapons.[43] He started playing piano at the age of six and took up bass guitar at the age of 12.[44] Whittle is from Richmond, Virginia and graduated from Berklee College of Music.[45] Whittle said, "As soon as I picked up the bass I was addicted. At school I wouldn't eat lunch; I'd just sneak into the janitor's closet and practice bass the whole time."[46]
