Minus-1 Records

[edit]

Minus-1 Records is an indie record label.

Origins

[edit]

Minus-1 started releasing music exclusively as a netlabel in the fall of 2007. A few releases by indie-rapper M.C. Carlito were completed and released with a small following being gained. Label owner Carl Ricco then called the label quits for a while. In October of 2009 Minus-1 was ressurected, and work began on creating an outlet for noise, dance, pop, and punk music apart from the major, and even major indie labels. [1]

Ideals

[edit]

Minus-1 Records operates on a few ideals that are different from most mainstream labels.

  • Almost all of the releases on Minus-1 are released for free, using the internet as the main method of distrobution. Occassionally, Minus-1 releases content to the major digital distributors (itunes, rhapsody, emusic, etc).
  • Music is considered an art. This is a philosophy Minus-1 garnered because music is most commonly treated as a commercial item.
  • Minus-1 keeps a relatively small percentage of monies earned from the sale of music. For example - if an artist sells an album on itunes for $9.99, the label will keep $1.50.
  • Everything is music. Minus-1 releases a lot of underground music, such as noise music, power electronics, ambient music, and drone music among others.
