Edgar Bainton

I was just browsing through other Wikipedian musicians (by category) and noticed you are also a singer. You might like to give me your opinion of the Edgar Bainton article I recently finished, you might not, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Alf ^melmac 23:28, 7 September 2005 (UTC) I've never heard of him personally (having never sung any of his music) but am very familliar with Stanford and Dyson, which are mentioned as friends of his. However, I found the article informative and interesting to read but the lists at bottom perhaps need some work. Prosify perhaps or shorten and link to an external site that shows the information. I did have another look at this, compared it to other composers who have their Opuses (sp?) listed: it doesn't seem to bad by comparison to the majority, so for the moment I'm happy to let it walk by itself. Alf ^melmac 00:00, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Fine by me. Are you a tenor then? It's the best part in my opinion - a lot of the time it's as sparkly as Soprano but with the advantage of being in the harmony (with all of the challenges that that brings). Yet another high baritone, I "run out" at at F above middle C, but I spent the better part of my singing life as an Alto, so I do a very reasonable 'fake tenor', and usually get away with it :) I'm particulary handy when the line is angular, or in early music, when the line is generally higher than most natural tenors have trouble keeping it, um... refined, if you follow my meaning. I'm the same, I can get the F but G? Takes a bit of falsetto and a bit of luck lol! True tenors are hard to find. I've only ever met one. Have you ever sang Zadok the Priest by Handel? That takes it out of you if your not a true tenor... --Celestianpower ^hab 09:50, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

I always try to 'bagsy' the alto line in Zadok, have sung it many, many times. The alto part in that is mostly boring but the few 'moments' it does have are well worth it. I've been lucky enought to have been in choirs in Oxford and Cambridge since the early 1980s, so have covered quite a fair bit of ground since then. Alf ^melmac 10:00, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

Mostly college choirs in both cities, used to sing with the Cathedral Singers of Christ Church Oxford (Cathedral B-team) fairly frequently, so know most of the anglican evensong, mass and mattins music repetoire. I haven't heard of HTS, but I don't get out much to concerts - usually busy enough doing them. Alf ^melmac 17:10, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

Wow - thank you! I sing tenor in my church choir. Tenor is so the best part - tune-esque glitter as well as harmony (and all of the challenges it entails). So what part do you sing then? --Celestianpower ^hab 15:08, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

I sing pretty much everything. I was on my high school choir —we annually enter national competition with other schools and have won 4 times—, and my choirmaster kept shuffling me around; one day I sing tenor, the other day I sing baritone (especially if enough baritones dont show up for rehersal) the other day I might go to Mezzo-soprano etc. I think the best part is alto though. Theres just something about it, their voices are always strong, think, and rich.

Cool. I'm not what anyone would call a true tenor - just a high baritone. I can only get up to an F/G. I do take issue with the tenor artixcle actually. C5? No piece of music I've come accross has been written with a tenor part that goes higher than G. If you don't mind me asking, are you male or female? I would guess male (singing baritone some of the time) but I know quite a few female baritones (of which my old choir director was one. --Celestianpower ^hab 15:36, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

Im male; I just have a high head range (A5 with head voice, D6 with falsetto). Since I was a kid about 10 or so, I became passionate about singing. Those were the time when we had those strong soprano voices :) I used to sing along to many singers (eg Rock Stars with high ranges like Bon Jovi, and a couple female singers like Patti Labelle) for long periods of time. Over a time, I developed a botton range, but my head voice didnt go away, so Im capable of singing pretty much every part with equal ease.

Hi guys, C above middle C is not so rare for tenors in concert pieces (secular), G - A flat frequently in Byrd, Lassus and Gibbons, withthe occasional B flat. The highest writing for tenor I've seen is the "Olim lacus colueram" from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, which is just ludicrous - from memory it goes up to f two octaves above middle C - but the music is about how painful it is to be a swan getting roasted, so it can sound painful. ; ) Alf ^melmac 16:16, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

I see. I obviously have a lot less experience than you two. I am however only 15 - 2 years ago I was getting Cs and Bs that were 2 octaves above middle C! I can get from about G, bottom of the Bass clef to G, top of the tenor clef. I knew you were a teen, but I didnt know you were this young. I thought you were probably 17. Im 18 — just turned it August 22. Im finally an adult- well legally :). To tell the truth, Im still 13 years old in my mind.

Also Alf, I have no idea about classical music. Im from Jamaica, we mostly listen to Reggae and Dance Hall —Yeah Man! However, I personally have very ecclectic musical taste. As long as something is gratifying to the ears, no matter from what genre, Ill listen to it.

Oh, that came out wrong. The thing is, classical music just isnt that popular where I'm from. The most popular are Reggae, Dance Hall, Hip Hop, and Calypso. Most of the radio and tv stations play reggae and dance hall, and the most popular American songs. Ofcourse other forms of music are quite popular there, like jazz, blues, pop, soul, rock ect, but the people who I grew up around really have no taste for classical music, so I never developed a strong taste for it. I have a minor taste for it though, but I only know the most popular classical articts, like Pavarotti for instance.

My mistake

My mistake about Pekin duck - I was checking Recent Changes for vandalism and noticed this edit, I took the new link and was here. I honestly thought it was a hoax against Peking duck, I should have checked. My first nomination was "amusing and obvious hoax" but I changed the wording after leaving a message on the main help page about removing the nomination when I realised it wasn't a hoax. Oh, now this is ridiculous: you're 15? You're a credit to your generation, good sir. When I was reading that nice welcome from you, I was envisaging a 24-ish year old (not that all 24 year old's are literate and witty, of course) sat at his computer, composing with great care and attention the said welcoming message; but, once again, I was proved to be wrong. And you're a musician, aswell!

Well, thanks for the welcome, and thanks for teaching me about the four-tildes thing. (I'm not risking doing it, in case I end up with my signature there, instead of what I want.) But I was looking at your Profile Page and noticed that you're a fellow Firefox user. I converted (from IE) a few days ago, and I've got a question: At the top-left corner of the Firefox window, instead of the Firefox logo, I just have a... well, it's one of those icons you get when the file extension doesn't have an icon associated with it; it doesn't look too fantastic, and I'm wondering if it's just my bad luck, or if you (and the rest of us) have the same problem. And if you don't (or you did, and you corrected it): how might I go about correcting it? It obviously doesn't stop the program working correctly, but it's just a bit of a niggle, to see that unfriendly icon sitting there. Other than that, I've got a small complaint: the Google Toolbar only works with Firefox if you've got Windows XP, and I'm missing the ability to jump to selected words on a webpage. Also, I could do with a bit more memory, but that's something nobody can do anything about, but myself.

And to a bit of contributing, because I'm sapping enough information and knowledge out of you: I think you might enjoy listening to James H. Reeve's Show on Key 103 (from 22:00-02:00 Sunday through to Thursday). He's pretty hilarious, and extremely intelligent and sensible, and judging by what I've read of your stuff, I think you'll enjoy his show. If you can't pick up Key 103 (FM 103) on your regular radio, you can listen to it through their website. And also, if you feel really mad, you can have a look at my blog.

I have the little Windows flag icon in the top left corner also and have no idea how to change it (although now you've mentioned it, it will bother me just as much). Sorry.

As for the google toolbar, try looking at the Firefox extensions site. That is one major advantage of Firefox: it has many extensions, easily downloadable that enhance web browsing. I search "google toolbar" on this site and got these results: [1]. They are all (more or less) what you want I think. But it surpasses the google toolbar by a long way. There are even Wikipedia tools to enhance wikipedia-ing (if there's such a term). I have installed the Toolbar and the animate changes button (which is very fun to watch if you have nothing better to do and you're obcessed with Wikipedia).

As to the radio show, Is that 10pm - 2am GMT or what? I live in the UK so I need to know when to tune in! It does, however, sound interesting.

Oh boy, in the time I've taken to write (get around to writing) this, you've probably managed to research everything you want to know about Key 103, discover a cure for the Windows Flag in Mozilla predicament and buy Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, finish reading it, and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Never mind: I'm here now. I downloaded the Googlebar Lite, by-the-way, and it's just the ticket. The reviews on the Mozilla site were saying that the regular Googlebar is pretty bloated, and I'm not a fan of bloatedness, so I went for the 'Lite' version. I'd noticed the Googlebar around the place, but if it wasn't for your persuasion I probably would never have downloaded it. And I had a look at the Wikipedia [Toolbar], but didn't bother downloading it. You see, with this amount of RAM, it's wise not to overload the thing with stuff I don't absolutely need. I mean, I love Wikipedia, etc. but I don't think I do enough editing to warrant getting the toolbar.

Anyway. Cheers for that. Key 103 is based in Manchester, England (their studio is just a few miles down the road from me) so, yeah: tune in for James H. at 22:00 GMT. I'll admit, that is a pretty late starting time for the average person, so you could just listen to the first hour, and if you like it enough, record it. You might think a bit less highly of me (if that's possible) because of this, but I don't have a regular job at the moment (no job at all, to be perfectly honest), so I have leisure to listen to the whole lot, until 2 o'clock, with only my fatigue dictating when/if I stop and settle down to some well-earned sleep. However, I'm planning on teaching people to play the guitar, so when that happens I'll hopefully settle into the life of a teacher, and will never enter into a 'regular job' until I die! And not even then. Because I'm sure teaching isn't a job: it'll be a pleasure to bring knowledge, wisdom and happiness in their art to people. Sorry, I'm starting to treat this place like my blog.

But before I sign off, I'm just wondering (for my own interest) if you can play an instrument, besides your vocal-cords, and if you like Chopin and/or Liszt. And there shouldn't be a question mark there, should there, because I was stating that I was wondering: not actually asking the question? But there should be one there, because I said 'should there' in that sentence. Oh boy, this is ridiculous. Somebody give me a good kick and make sure I land over at www.blog.co.uk.

Well, you'll be sad to know that I haven't actually done any research into either. I figured that I'd wait on your reply. As to the windows icon: I still have no idea. I tried a search on their site but what keywords do you give. Anyway, I resolved that it wasn't worth worrying about really. And no, I've never heard of that book.

I'll give it a quick listen (inbetween homeworks lol!) tonight.

As to instruments, no I don't. I'd quite like the chance to learn piano but I have no space for one in my house and have you seen the prices of lessons? I get all my vocal (and theory) training at my choir. I also, sadly, have not heard of those two musicians but it sounds as if I'd like them if I had. But those articles do needs some copyeditting. Peacock and weasel worrds everywhere!

List of Pokémon characters

I see you spotted my pet project (and tagged it with the cleanup tag). I thought the cleanup tag was more or less redundant with the stub tag, myself.

I wanted to make a comprehensive list. This isn't a merge target (unlike lists like List of Johto Gym Leaders), except in the possible case of minor characters who don't merit more than a sentence (looking at you, Gabby & Ty), but instead a reference for all the articles that we already have or make in the future. I wanted someone who didn't know much about Pokémon to be able to look at this list and say, "Oh, so that's who that is," without having to dive through the lists and in-depth characters articles.
