Carbonate draft 1[edit]

Many scholars [1] [2] [3], world leaders [4]and religious leaders [5][6] have labeled the Gaza Strip a Concentration Camp. Befor the forced removal of settlers in 2005, Gaza had the highest population density in the world[7] and although the figure recently calculated of 3,823/km² is lower, much of the land is still occupied by the Israeli army. Living condition are compared to ghettos [8][9] and in 2006, the Israeli military began a campaine of bombing and shelling of democratically elected government offices and raids destroying civilian infrastructure[10] that has cost hundreds of civilian lives[11]. Supporters of Israel have labled people who call Gaza a concentration camp anti-semite [12]. The state of Israel denies the conditions in Gaza.

Theron J draft[edit]

I should say that I don't think this comparison is particularly necessary, but I personally wouldn't have an objection to a properly sourced note that looked something like this:

Popular uses of the term "Concentration Camp"[edit]

As a result of the confinement of its population, the population concentration, and other living conditions, various writers have compared the Gaza Strip to a concentration camp,[13] [14] [15], including political[16] and religious figures.[17][18]

Carbonate draft 2[edit]

I like that as a starting sentance, but I think there should be more of the facts and details to explain why. Also, the article in question List of concentration and internment camps is already sectioned by country.

Israel[edit]

As a result of the confinement of its population, the population concentration, and other living conditions, various writers have compared the Gaza Strip to a concentration camp,[19] [20] [21], including political[22] and religious figures.[23][24] Befor the forced removal of settlers in 2005, Gaza had the highest population density in the world[25] and although the figure recently calculated of 3,823/km² is lower, much of the land is still occupied by the Israeli army. Living condition are compared to ghettos [26][27] Supporters of Israel have labled people who call Gaza a concentration camp anti-semite [28]. The state of Israel denies the conditions in Gaza.

Notes[edit]

A couple notes:

  • The Encarta cite doesn't say that Gaza had the highest population in the world. (It may be true, I just don't know). Encarta just says that Gaza currently has "one of the highest population growth rates and population densities in the world."
  • I'm not sure about the Papal encylical. Wasn't Gaza under Egyptian rule at the time it was issued?
  • Personally, I don't think you need to spend a lot of time discussing conditions in the Gaza strip. You will be linking to the Gaza strip page, and people can read about the conditions there. IMHO, it would be enough to say "Because of the conditions in the Gaza strip, various writers have compared the strip to a concentration camp."
  • The reason I proposed a separate section for "popular uses" is to try to compromise about whether Gaza actually is a concentration camp. Some of your writers call Gaza a tomb, too, but if you tried to include it in an article on burial methods, you might get some resistance.
