Important Historical Locations[edit]

Château d'Annecy[edit]

The first record of the castle comes from the twelfth century.[1][2][3] However, it is not exactly known when it was originally built.[2][4] The structure has been damaged by fire several times but has been rebuilt after each occurrence.[3] It was originally owned by the Counts of Geneva.[3][4] It was designated an historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture in 1959.[5] A museum now operates in the building which features a variety of collections of regional art, archaeology, and natural history.[2][6]

Cathédrale Saint Pierre[edit]

Saint Pierre was built as a Franciscan chapel between 1535 and 1538.[7][8][9] In 1538, as a result of the Protestant Reformation, members of the Catholic Clergy had to leave Geneva and seek refuge in Annecy with the Franciscan monks.[10][8] This notably included bishop Francis de Sales.[7][8][11][12] The building underwent a number of expansions and refurbishments, later becoming recognized as a cathedral in 1822.[7] It was designated an historical monument by the Ministry of Culture in 1906.[9] The exterior reflects a Renaissance style while the interior has many Gothic details.[7][13][11]
