I decided I'd work on a WMTS article but don't have time to finish it right now. Here is the start.

The Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) is a specification for retrieving cartographic data, developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium. The definition generally requires a URI structure which attempts to fulfill REST principles. The WMTS protocol fills a gap between the simplistic standard used by OpenStreetMap and the complexity of the Web Map Service standard, providing simple urls to tiles while also supporting alternate spatial referencing system.

WMTS supports rectangular (vs square) tiles, and tiles can be different sizes at different scales.

WTMS uses KVP, SOAP, and RESTful encodings.

WMTS is designed to operate with other OGC standards.

History

[edit]

WMTS was preceded by the OsGEO TMS (2006) open standard and proprietary tiling systems including Google Maps and Virtual Earth.

OGC released WMTS as a standard in April 2010.

Support

[edit]

The WMTS standard is supported by several server systems including the open source projects GeoServer, MapProxy and mod-geocache.
