Anime History

In the Asian Popular culture Anime is a very well known cartoon that originated in Japan influenced by Japanese culture starting its trajectory as the early 20th century. Anime is not only popular among young children it also popular within adults because of the different kinds of anime that exists giving entertainment for all ages, "Anime In Japan, the word refers to any kind of animation at all, but the rest of the world has adopted it to mean animation specifically from Japan"[1]. One of the most popular Japanese animations that became very popular during the early 20th century was Astro Boy but in reality anime has been present for more then a century ago,The first animated film released in Japan, and therefore the first anime, was probably released in late 1916 or very early ‘17 by Shimokawa Oten, made with chalk, and less than five minutes long. The uncertainty comes from the fact that most early Japanese films were dismantled after the reels were finished.not many know about Anime and its background [1] The reason behind uncertainty on the beginning of Japanese animation is due to the lack of previous animation but the reason behind the lack of films is because of What survived that practice was largely lost with the destruction of many film studios and theaters in the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, destroyed in the bombings of World War 2, or simply disintegrated over time. The nitrocellulose early films were printed on was extremely flimsy and incredibly flammable[1] Also due to the material these films were composed of they were easily set on fire causing extinction of these films, while other films were just simply lost during natural disasters or through natural decomposition. [1] Back then if anyone wanted to watch Animation you either had to be wealthy, go to a theater, or posses of a projector that consisted of reels.

A Japanese Anime that originated in 1963 produced and made by Tezuka and Mushi Pro creators of the very first anime television series which consisted of "limited animation", which helped reduce the amount of images per second that were shown on the film. This series most known as "Astro Boy" in Japanese "Tetsuwan Atom", was based off of Tezuka's most popular manga. Which is a Japanese comic this series was based on a boy who was a robot and lived among humans fighting crime and battling aliens, and other robots. This animation turned out to be a huge success in different countries allowing a global spread of Japanese animation. With these different countries came the United States where it was shown on television in black and white. With the animation industry seeing the huge success of "Astro Boy" and the amount of income an anime series could provide soon the industry would open a new gateway for other aspiring anime television series.

New Time

During the 1980's Video Cassettes started to become a trending commodity allowing children to watch their favorite movies or shows countless number of times without have to wait. This was classified as the "Golden Age" for many in the anime world because many of the audiences were asking for more anime television series being nostalgic from their previous beloved "Astro Boy". That is when soon after Dragon Ball would come to present itself targeted specifically boys from ages ranging 6-15 this series would become very popular just like astro boy . Besides anime shows rising in popularity soon manga would also see a rise in creations and popularity but then would come video games as technology continues to expand and here is where super mario bros would shine its light.The early 1990’s served as what was known to be an anime boom. Due to this, anime culture further evolved when anime conventions started taking place.[2]

Film Influence

Many famous western films have been influenced by anime and its components this can be seen in many popular films such as ,"The Lion King",The Lion King from Kimba the White Lion wholesale. Created by Osamu Tezuka as a manga in the 1950s, then broadcasted as an animated series in the mid-1960s, the similarities to Disney's 1994 feature-film blockbuster go as far as exact shots Mufasa on Pride Rock, his ghost appearing to Simba in the sky, to identical characters and story elements. In fact, Lion King star Matthew Broderick thought he was initially working on a version of Kimba.[3]

Another influence on western films was "The Matrix",influenced by Ghost in the Shell producers Lana and Andy Wachowski brought to life The Matrix which was heavily influenced by the cyberpunk actioner Ghost in the Shell, these producers wanted to make their favorite anime come to life saying, "We want to do that in liveaction." Demonstrating their influence ranging from the green digital typography used to descend into the virtual world to the ports used in the back of a person's neck, the Wachowskis borrowed lovingly from Mamoru Oshii's Ghost as well as the overall cinematic language of anime. This clearly demonstrated how influential anime was on this popular Hollywood film.the directors enjoyed anime so much that they decided to direct in 2003 a direct-to-video feature named The Animatrix which was done with the help of Japan's finest directors Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and Mahiro Maeda to take The Matrix franchise back to its anime roots. After the "Animatrix" in 2008 they created what is known as Speed Racer, the closest anyone in film has come to depicting the psychedelic uniqueness of anime in live action":1"

Anime Culture

In Japan, anime has such a large influence, you can find statues, other landmarks and sites dedicated to the anime culture and their creators. For instance, in Odaiba, visitors will be greeted by a monstrous life-size Gundam at the entrance of the building which hosts a small indoor theme park dedicated to the popular anime series. The town of Akihabara, located near the heart of the capital, houses many shops and anime related venues. These are just two examples but the deeper you dig, you will see what an enormous influence the anime culture has on people in Japan.[4] for the Japanese culture anime is seen as something loved and cherished by everyone because it is something for everyone and ranges from all ages a part of popular Japanese culture that is inclusive for all ages.


Due to the overwhelming love that anime and manga receive in japan annual conventions are held for its followers that consist of anime and manga, special appearances,limited edition merchandise, and video games. It is a convention used for many of its followers to enjoy and celebrate the animation world. At these important conventions thousands of its fans cosplay,the term “cosplay” comes from the words “costume play”, which is when fans dress up as their favorite character from a series, cartoon, or film, impersonating that character. Cosplay is not only for anime but has also been used in Western characters from comics and cartoon series. which is dressing as your favorite anime,manga, or video game character. it is seen as a huge event within the Japanese culture. For some anime may be seen as only an animation but for Japanese it is now engraved and part of their culture which they enjoy and bring it within their daily lives.Pop culture is one of Japan’s largest exports Japan is responsible for the world’s most popular trends and among them, anime and manga, all a piece of Japanese culture.[5]
