Elizabeth Fritsch MA(RCA) CBE[edit]

Elizabeth Fritsch (b.1940) is an internationally known ceramic artist and British studio potter [1] .Since the seventies Elizabeth Fritsch has been one of the most influential artistic figures in British ceramics.[2] She makes unique hand built vessels with strong architectonic qualities, arranged subtly in groups designed to highlight geometric patterns and shapes. Fritsch studied harp and piano at the Royal Academy of Music (1958-1964) but eventually took up ceramics working under Hans Coper at the Royal College of Art (1968-1971). Fritsch was one of a group of outstanding women ceramicists who emerged from the Royal Collage of Art in the seventies. Fritschs' ceramic vessels are fine coil-built stoneware vessels smoothed and refined into accurately profiled forms. They are hand decorated with dry matt slips, in colours unusual for ceramics. Fritschs' early works uses pale colours and later Fritsch used stronger blues and green and more recently she has turned to monochrome forms too. Fritsch has had a number of significant one-person shows over the years and in 1996 was a finalist for the Jerwood Prize for Ceramics. Fritschs' work is represented in major collections internationally and in Britain, she is one of the most highly valued contemporary ceramic artists working today.
