Carlos Levin (born 1954) is an Uruguayan composer, arranger and teacher.

Biography[edit]

Born in the city of Young, Department of Río Negro, Uruguay. He studied at the University School of Music and with distinguished Uruguayan and foreign teachers such as Amílcar Rodríguez Inda, Abel Carlevaro , Pedro Laniella, Yolanda Rizzardini, Guido Santórsola, Héctor Tosar, Riccardo Bianchini and Leo Brouwer. He was member of the Núcleo de Música Nueva de Montevideo (NMN) and the Sociedad Uruguaya de Música Contemporánea (SUMC), filial of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). He has composed music and made musical arrangements for soloists, groups of chamber music and orchestra. He is part of the catalog of guitar compositions Compositores Uruguayos del Siglo XX by Colombian musician Juan Olaya (Editorial Capibara, 2004). Among the musical arrangements are all the Frédéric Chopin compositions for piano and orchestra in piano and string quintet versions. As a cellist he has performed popular as well as classical music. Teacher of harmony, counterpoint, musical analysis and introduction to musical composition in different uruguayan institutions.

Finalist in the Latin American Contest of guitar compositions "Agustín Barrios Mangoré" in Asunción (Paraguay - 1994). He was one of the composers performed in the conference «The guitar music in the Uruguay» carried out by the guitarist and composer Abel Carlevaro (Montevideo, 1996). He has represented Uruguay, as composer and arranger, in Uruguayan festivals: Encuentro de la Guitarra Uruguaya (Montevideo, 2005) ^[1]; Festival Interamericano de Poesia y Canto de Cámara "Iris Bombet Franco" (Montevideo, 2013) ^[2] and foreigners: ISCM: World Music Days (2001, Yokohama, Japan), with the support of the Fondo Nacional de Musica (Fonam) ^[3]; The Festival of Light (Hong Kong, 2001) ^[4]; The Joy of Music Festival (Hong Kong, 2010) ^[5]; The Joy of Chopin & Schumann (Singapore, 2010) ^[6]; and XVII Latin American Music Festival (Caracas - Venezuela, 2012), with the support of Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay ^[7].
