Children's choice awards are book awards voted upon by children. Participation in a children's choice awards helps children enrich their identities as readers[1] and participation in such awards has been proven to to get children to start and continue reading.[2]

The first award was the Young Reader's Choice award established by the Pacific Northwest Library Association in 1940, with Kansas the first state to establish one in 1952.[3] From the mid 1950s to the 1980s it was common for many of these awards to be established jointly by various state literacy organizations such as a library association and reading council.[3] Beginning in the early 90s many established Children's Choice Awards broke themselves into small groupings to capture the choices of different age readers, particularly with the creation of picture book and teen awards.[3]

The organizing committees of reader's choice awards can vary with some states appointing members, while other states elect members.[3] Some states also include teen representation for awards serving older children.[3] In most states students, as well as parents, teachers, and librarians may all nominate titles for possible inclusion.[3] Nearly all awards require the book to have been published in the last five years, with others having additional stipulations covering translations and whether the author still needs to be alive.[3]
