About Me

My name is Lauren Bacon and I am a freshman at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. Georgia Southern University is a mid-size college in rural Georgia so the city of Statesboro is known as a college town. I graduated from St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta, Ga. In high school, I earned the HOPE scholarship which I am very proud of myself for achieving. The HOPE scholarship is given for Georgia Students that achieve above a 3.0 GPA. I also earned over 25 hours of community service in high school. I lettered four years in a row for Varsity Competition Cheerleading. I chose Georgia Southern University as my college for its great nursing program and because both of my parents attended Georgia Southern. I am originally from Atlanta, Ga so it was a change of scenery from the city. I am currently majoring in nursing. I am involved in Greek life and decided to join Phi Mu sorority. I am thankful that I joined a sorority because it is a great way to meet people and get involved with the community. Some of my hobbies include bicycling, reading, and going to concerts. Some of my major interests include anatomy, football, and motorsports.

My Contributions

I contributed an article on a small town country band called The Johnathan East Band. This band is mainly known around the southeast and I hope my article will have them become more popular. Country is my favorite music genre and that is why I enjoyed writing this article. I will keep working to improve my article on The Johnathan East Band.

Relationship to technology

In my family, technology was always there for me to use to my convenience. My uncle worked for a technology company so we always had our technology up to date and at its best. I have taken computer science classes in grade school so I am familiar with all computer programs. I would rather receive an email or text message than a hand written letter because I believe our technology has made communication faster and more efficient in today’s society. I am familiar with all Microsoft programs, but I am a beginner for editing a Wikipedia article. I can learn any computer skill quickly though.

Philosophy of Wikipedia

I believe Wikipedia is an efficient internet encyclopedia database because it gives you facts quick and straight to the point. In high school, our teachers discouraged students to use Wikipedia because they believed that there were better resources on the internet. We were only allowed to use library research databases like ebscohost. Since I have been to college, I am becoming more familiar with Wikipedia since I was sheltered from it in high school. I enjoy using it for random things I am interested in or using it for school. I think it is great that is open to the public because you can get different points of view on different topics. I believe on some pages though that there should be a minimum set of qualifications for the writers.

Languages

I am a native english speaker and english is the only language I am strong in speaking, reading, and writing in. In high school, I took two years of spanish which only gave me the basics of the language. I was better at reading and writing in spanish than speaking it. I am interested in continuing in learning more of the spanish language in the future.

I enjoy just browsing on youtube and finding new things on the internet.
