History

[edit]

2023-2024: Beginnings

Not much is known about Deer Death, as they prefer to stay anonymous. The band was formed in 2023, and released their debut single "love". In May of 2023. They later began to receive more attention on the social media platform Tik-Tok leading them to release the now renowned singles "Fly Away", "Ripped Out My Lungs So I Could Breathe", and "Suffocate". Later in September of 2016, they released their debut EP "glass delusion" stating "I feel like i'm made of glass."[2] Glass Delusion references an external manifestation of a psychiatric disorder in the late middle ages and early modern period of Europe, in which people feared that they were made of glass "and therefore likely to shatter into pieces"[3]

Later, in December of 2023. They released their first debut album "deer death". With lead single "Eve's Garden" and "Letter To My Inner Child(Featuring Scooter Ward). Track 6 "Apathy" was featured on Spotify's "New Music Fridays[4]" and received a write up from the independent music platform "popfiltr" stating:

"Emerging from the shoegaze scene, Deer Death introduces their self-titled album, "Deer Death." This debut is expected to be a rich blend of distorted guitar sounds, ethereal vocals, and a heavy emphasis on creating a textured, layered musical experience."[5]

2024-present: Recent Events

After a short hiatus, and having only released a compilation of remasters and demos, Deer Death made a return in February of 2024. After teasing the project, and posting cryptic messages and countdowns on their social media that just stated "Next Death". They released the single, "Lonely Day". This single featured on Spotify's "All New Rock[6]" playlist and was met with acclaim from fans. The follow up single, "Year of Suffering" released shortly after. In the following weeks, "Next Death" was revealed to be a collaborative project with producer Nextime.

On their website, they have stated:

"Next Death is an album about pain, unrequited love, and regret.

Every song was crafted after an experience of uncomfortable feelings. The process of creating it with Nextime involved a lot of solitude, and introspective thought, and how said experiences have shaped my mental image of who I am, deep inside. The song's aren't "radio friendly", they aren't polished, they're raw. I wanted this project to be the most pure, raw exploration of my mind. One example of that is track 5 "Lydia". Lydia is name I've attributed to a person that only specifically exists in my dreams, who constantly treads those dreams, and sets the stage for a perfect reality that isn't tangible. But she's a person I could never have, a person I could never love, nor be with in any regard.

This project was inspired by grunge rock, artists such as Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam. Those artists are the backbone of which "deer death" exists. It was also inspired by Berserk by Kentaro Miura, songs like "Year of Suffering" and lyrics such as "When there's two, the blade grows heavy". As the project was being made, I watched Berserk '97, and read the entire manga in 2-3 days, and it had a profound effect on the music that followed.

Thank you to Nextime & Thislandis, and thank you to everyone that has been on this journey of growth, anyone who has shown love, or support, you make it happen."[7]

It is unknown when the next project will be released. Deer Death has been releasing weekly or bi-weekly singles, leading up to their next project in 2024.

Deer Death has received a variety of Spotify editorial playlisting, and their streaming numbers continue to grow. Creating a song with lead singer Scooter Ward of Cold, and further cementing their place as a staple band of the grungegaze genre.

Music style, and identity

[edit]

The lead singer of Deer Death has stated "I can only make songs when i feel really fucked up, so negative emotions provoke a lot of it, that cycle leads into downward spirals".

Since their formation, they have remained anonymous. The leader and primary artist is just known as "Deer" or "d". It is unknown what the other members do, but it is known that there is another guitarist, drummer and bassist. Deer has stated that he does his own vocal mixing, and guitar as well as his own recording most of the time apart from everyone else. As well as using instrumentals made by producers close to him and implementing elements like guitar, breaks, glitches and effects. Not much is known about "d" except that he has been making music for 12 years as of 2023.

They have stated that the name comes from "The Life of Death[8]", an animated short created in 2012 by artist Marsha Onderstijn[9]. Marsha follows a day with Death, who learns to fall in love with life. The short depicts Death as a tender character, that is interested in the living, as far as feeling sorrow for accidentally killing a flower. Deer has stated:

"This made me cry one day, and the name followed".

Musically they have been categorized under many different genres, including alternative metal, shoegaze, nu metal and grungegaze. They are vague about their influences but, they have also stated that they are influenced by bands such as Deftones, Cold, Nirvana, Superheaven, Mudvayne, Type-O-Negative, and Alice In Chains.
