The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (French: Agence canadienne d’évaluation environnementale) is the Government of Canada agency responsible for providing Canadians with high-quality environmental assessments. Environmental assessments are reports containing the anticipated environmental effects of a particular project. They also propose ways to eliminate or reduce a project’s potential impacts on the environment before the project begins and predict whether there will be significant adverse environmental effects, even after the mitigation is implemented. The Agency reports to the federal Minister of the Environment (Canada).

History

[edit]

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency was established in 1994 just prior to the adoption of the ''Canadian Environmental Assessment Act'' in 1995 by the Parliament of Canada.[1] The Act is the legal basis for the federal environmental assessment process in Canada.

Agency Mandate

[edit]

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency’s role is to provide Canadians with high-quality environmental assessments that contribute to informed decision making in support of sustainable development. The Agency plays a leadership role in the review of major projects assessed as comprehensive studies and those referred to review panels. The Agency also coordinates the Government of Canada's Aboriginal consultation activities during the environmental assessment process. [2]

Organization

[edit]

Elaine Feldman was appointed President of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency on July 5, 2010.[3]

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has approximately 250 employees at its headquarters and in its regional offices.[4] Agency headquarters are in Ottawa, Ontario. The Agency also has six regional offices across Canada: Atlantic (Halifax), Québec (Ste. Foy), Ontario (Toronto), Prairie (Winnipeg), Alberta and Northwest Territories (Edmonton) and Pacific and Yukon (Vancouver).[5]
