Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Dr. Sangeeta Sinha are a unique scientist couple in the state of Bihar, India who have made a significant contribution to the field of science in general and to solar energy, desert technology, renewable energy, environment and rural development in India and abroad in particular. They have not only made some path-breaking research in these fields but have also been able to apply their knowledge for the upliftment of the people and society in India and Japan. Besides being married in their personal life they are both married to the cause of science and humanity.

Biography

Dr. Sanjay Kumar was born in Muzzafarpur on 1 November, 1965. He got his school education completed from the famous Netarhat Vidyalay in Bihar. He obtained his M.Sc.(Engg.) in 1990 and PhD in 1994 from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. Dr Kumar joined as a Lecturer at L N Mithila University in 1996. Then he moved to B N Ambedkar University, Muzzfarpur in the same year and has been working there since then. However during this period Dr Kumar served as a Visiting Researcher at Kyoto University from 1997 to 1999 and at Seikei University from 1999 to 2000 in Japan. At present he is working as a full time Professor at Chandragupta Institute of Management Patna. He is also a Visiting Professor of Tribhuvan University since 2006.Dr Kumar also has participated in a number of International Seminars/Conferences and has the rare distinction of being the Chair of many of these.

Dr. Sangeeta Sinha was born in a village named Mokama on 8 February, 1968 in Bihar. She received her degree of M.Sc in 1989 and PhD in 1994 from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. She started her career as a Project Scientist with Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education in 1994. Then she joined as a Lecturer at L N Mithila University in Bihar where she worked from 1996 to 2002. She further moved as a Lecturer to B R Ambedkar University where she is working till date. Dr Sinha served as a Visiting Researcher at Seikei University from 1998 to2000 and as a Professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in Japan. At present she is working as a Professor at Chandragupta Institute of Management Patna. Her main areas of research include Regional Development, Energy and Environment and Computer Modeling.

Contribution

Together they are carrying out excellent research on renewable energy and environment through a centre that is known as CENTRE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH at Muzzfarpur in Bihar. One notable project they completed through this centre was to provide electricity to several police stations of Muzzfarpur through Solar energy.

  • “Development of WLED Solar Lighting System to replace Kerosene Lamps” (Main Investigator): It is funded by Nalanda Open University. Its objective is replacement of kerosene lamps from rural areas.
  • “Integrated Rural Area development to stop mass migration from a typical village in Bihar” (Main Investigator and collaborator from Indian side): It is funded by Govt. of Japan as collaborative Indo-Japan research project. Its objective is “total planning from health to energy sources and environment to employment using linear programming techniques”.
  • “Arid Rural Area Rehabilitation based on renewable energy application” (Main Investigator and collaborator from Indian side): It is funded by Nissan Company of Japan as collaborative Indo-Japan research project. Its objective is “Arid Rural Area Rehabilitation and Afforestation by Hybrid development of Biogas, solar and water treatment in India”.
  • “ Environmental Rehabilitation and Development” (Main Investigator and collaborator from Indian side) : It is funded by JUSCO group of companies in Japan collaborative Indo-Japan research project. Its objective is, “Development of renewable energy base, waste utilization and integrated management of rural resources to reduce environmental stress, promote conservation and stop mass migration to urban slums”.
  • “Waste material utilization for afforestation, and desalination of soil; Modeling of environmental parameters for application in remote areas; & Exploring possibilities of using C & N metabolism in plants for withstanding water and salt stress in arid areas”: The work was part of the ongoing project being executed in Western Australia as co-operative project between Japan and Australia with funding from Govt. of Japan.
  • “Fault Detection and Diagnosis in HVAC System (Main Investigator)” : The project was funded by Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science and is a part of International Energy Agency (IEA) “Annex - 25” and “Annex - 34” activities to develop Computer Aided Fault Detection and Diagnosis tool for energy conservation in HVAC systems. The work has received recognition from the Japanese task force as a major tool to meet the CO2 reduction target committed by Japan in the Earth Summit (COP-3), Kyoto, 1998.
  • “Acid Rain Potential in Asia (Project Scientist)”: The project was funded by World Bank and Asian Development Bank. I coordinated with University of IOWA, USA for development of Atmospheric Transportation Module (ATMOS), one of the four major modules in “RAINS-ASIA” computer model. A similar model, “RAINS EUROPE” has been the basis of SO2 reduction treaty in Europe. The work was coordinated with Swedish Environmental Protection Agency for data collection/analysis at various sites throughout India.
  • “Aspirator Coupled Solar Distillation System for Grain Drying and Development of Photocatalytic methods for Effluent Treatments (Research Associate)” : The project was funded by CSIR, GOI, India.

  • DST Research project, SSD/SS/024/2006 Design and Development of Family size Solar Fish Dryer suitable for Single Day Extended Period Drying (Supervisor under WOS scheme) : It is funded by Department of Science and Technology, Gov. of India. Its objective is to design family size solar drying systems suitable for flood prone areas and good for single day drying of aqua-products.
