Lois van Baarle (Born October 11, 1985) is a dutch digital artist, also known as Loish, specializing in character design and illustration. Her expressive drawings often feature different types of woman in a variety of dreamlike settings. Van Baarle shares her art and process with a large number of followers and fans on a variety of social media platforms like Deviant Art, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Her popularity made her often to be referred to as a 'social media sensation'[1]. In 2015 she successfully funded a crowd sourced book called 'The art of Loish: A look behind the scenes' together with publisher 3dTotal[2][3]. The book was funded within 2 hours[4].
Early Life[edit]
Van Baarle, born in the dutch city of Dordrecht, moved to the U.S.A. at the age of four together with her parents and siblings. Being the child of dutch embassy employees she lived all over the world including: Indonesia (Age 8), France (Age 11) and Belgium (Age 15), before moving back to Holland at the age of 18[5].
Lois started drawing at a very young age[3]. According to Lois, in an interview with Schoolism's Bobby Chiu, her first memory of being inspired by other artists was seeing Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989 film) [6]. [7]. Although teaching herself to draw traditionally, Lois started experimenting with digital art on Oekaki boards[8]. Eventually moving to Deviant Art to show her work to others.
Education[edit]
Van Baarle studied animation in Ghent, Belgium before moving to her native Netherlands, to study at The Utrecht School of the Arts. Lois has called her experience in Ghent one of the darkest periods in her life, calling it 'not a good fit'. Switching to the school in Hilversum helped her find herself again[4]. After 4 years of studying in Hilversum she obtained a European Media Master of Arts and a Bachelor in Design[8]. With her graduation project 'Trichrome Blue' she won the HKU award, an honnorary award and also the public award. Lois decided to choose for an education in animation because it would be a good way to expand on her drawing skills[8].
