It was a Queensland Government department responsible for main roads construction and maintenance. On 26 March 2009, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 2) 2009, the Department of Main Roads was abolished and its functions transferred to the new Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Establishment[edit]

On 26 February 1996, under the Public Service Management and Employment (Departmental Changes) Order (No. 2), the Department of Main Roads was established and all functions relating to roads then held by the previous Department of Transport (disambiguation) (II) were transferred to the new department. On 8 January 2007, that part of the Department of Transport known as the Infrastructure Branch also became part of the Department of Main Roads.[1]

Abolition[edit]

On 26 March 2009, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 2) 2009, the Department of Main Roads was abolished and its functions transferred to the new Department of Transport and Main Roads.[1]

Function[edit]

The agency had the following responsibilities:[1]

  • From 26 February 1996, under Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 2) 1996, the Department was named as responsbile for Roads (providing and maintaining a road network as part of the state's transport system).

The agency controlled the Department of Main Roads (II), Road System and Engineering Group, Transport Technology Division, Construction Services from 14/2/1996 to 26/3/2009 and also controlled the Main Roads Department, Southern Region, Wide Bay District, Bundaberg Office from 26/2/1996 to 26/3/2009.[1]
