Eight Sleep is an American health & wellness oriented technology company that develops products for "sleep fitness".[1][2][3]

Its flagship product, Pod[4], is a sensor layer in the form of a mattress cover which cools and heats the body to provide sleep benefits[5], along with tracking sleep and health metrics without the need of an additional wearable device.[6][7]

Eight Sleep was founded in 2014 in San Francisco by Matteo Franceschetti, Massimo Andreasi Bassi, Andrea Ballarini, and Alexandra Zatarain.

The company financed their first projects through a crowdfunding campaign in 2015. Since 2016, the company has raised multiple rounds through venture capital, include a Series B fundraising round in 2018[8] and a Series C fundraising round in 2021 led by Valor Equity Partners with participation from SoftBank and Founders Fund.[9][10][11]

In 2022, Eight Sleep acquired health coaching company Span Health.

Products[edit]

Eight Sleep's flagship product is the Pod mattress cover[12] that heats and cools between 55° and 110° F. It makes adjustments through the night to keep its users asleep and increase the duration of their deep and REM sleep stages. According to clinical data, users observe an increase of 34% in time in deep sleep, an improvement of 19% in heart rate variability[13] and an overall sleep quality improvement of 32%.[14][15] The company has also integrated its offerings with Amazon's Echo devices[16][17] and other home automation software such as Home Assistant.[18] In 2022, Eight Sleep launched the third generation of the Pod, Pod 3.[19][20]

The Pod doesn't require the user wear an additional device to track sleep and health metrics at an accuracy comparable to specialized devices.[21] For example, its heart rate tracking was calculated to be 99% as accurate[22] as a gold-standard electrocardiograph and its respiratory rate tracking was 98% accurate[23] when compared to a respiratory inductance plethysmography belt.[24][25]

Reviews and awards[edit]

The company's products have been well-received by technology reviewers. Newsweek called the company's Mattress Pod Pro system the "mattress of the future" and praised the product's temperature control system as a major selling point.[26] New York Magazine described the company's smart mattresses as the only ones on the market able to reliably provide temperature control.[27] However, a reviewer at Forbes who tried the bed found himself "a little anxious" due to the product's tendency to penalize his "sleep score" if he did not go to bed on time.[28]

Eight Sleep is the supplier of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Racing team wherein Lewis Hamilton and George Russell reportedly use the Pod.[29] Other athletes such as Justin Medeiros and baseball player Aaron Judge also use the Pod.[30][31]

The Pod has also received several awards including being listed in Time's Best Inventions, Men's Health Sleep Award[32], GQ Fitness Award[33], Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies and Y Combinator's Top Companies[34]. Elon Musk called the product "good".[35]

Future[edit]

In the future, the company aims to build the Hyperpod using blackout canopy curtains which will offer individualized heating and cooling and imperceptible sensors of health tracking.[36] It may also be able to capture advanced imaging to detect illnesses and conditions during sleep.[37][38]
