UFC
[edit]Mohammed was originally scheduled to fight Romio Valdez but was promoted to the main event at UFC 248. Mohammed suffered his first career loss by unanimous decision to James Vick.
Mohammed had a bounce back win vs Al Laquinta at UFC 254 with a knockout in the second round. This was the first of his fights to ever be held at the legendary Madison Square Garden.
Mohammed next faced Tony Ferguson at UFC 257. This fight almost lasted until the end of the opening round but Mohammed would come away victorious with a first round knockout.
Mohammed next faced Leonard Santos at UFC Fight Night 239. Mohammed steadily handled Santos knocking him out in the first round of the matchup.
Mohammed's next fight was the biggest of his career to date. Conner McGregor scoffed at Mohammed's rise in the UFC and called him overrated. He brazenly said that he would kick Mohammed's ass and knock him out in under ten seconds. Mohammed accepted a fight against McGregor at UFC 266 in Prudential Center. The lead up to the event featured both sides exchanging words with one another with several physical altercations between both teams. Most notably, Mohammed punched one of McGregor's crew member breaking his jaw, retaliating for words McGregor said about his religion and culture. Things went bad during the press conference when both men went at it and event security had to escort both parties to their respective locker-room's. The build up to the fight was the most anticipated in UFC history. The headline drew 3.4 million PPV buys, the most ever for an MMA event at the time. Mohammed promised to give away his entire fight check if he didn't knockout McGregor within two rounds. At the event, Mohammed defeated McGregor in the second round via knockout in a dominant performance. After the contest Mohammed scaled the Octagon and tried to attack McGregor's teammate Dillon Danis resulting in a brawl between the two teams.
After defeating McGregor, Mohammed earned a chance to fight for the UFC lightweight championship vs Khabib Nurmagomedov. Unlike the fight vs McGregor, Mohammed was very respectful towards Khabib citing both men sharing the same faith. There was mutual respect between the two and they would often pray salah together, a Muslim prayer, and go out to Jummuah, a gathering amongst Muslim's on Fridays. The main event fight was held at Madison Square Garden on November 5, 2022. Mohammed defeated Khabib via knockout in the first round. After only 24 seconds into the contest, Mohammed landed a kick to the chin on Khabib and got the knockout victory. This was his quickest victory of his career and he won his first belt in his career. After the fight, Mohammed ran to check on Khabib to ensure he was okay. This was a bittersweet victory for Mohammed. After the fight, Mohammed signed a five fight contract with the UFC.
Mohammed had a rematch fight with Conner McGregor at UFC 276 in Japan in his first title defense. This time around, the UFC ensured that it would try to avoid the same fiasco that happened when the pair fought previously at UFC 266. Both men were much more calm during the lead-up to the big fight. However, during the press conference, McGregor shouted an obscenity towards Mohammed's team which lead to one of Mohammed's trainers having to be restrained by security. Mohammed was much more level-headed this time around and didn't fall for McGregor's antics. The headline for the fight drew more than 8.4 million PPV sales, the most ever for a UFC fight. Mohammed won the fight in dominating fashion, once again winning by knockout in the second round and successfully defending his title for the first time since being champion. After the fight, both fighters shook hands and seemed to have mutual respect for one another. Mohammed said in the post-fight interview, that he wouldn't be entertaining anymore McGregor talk and wanted to defend his title against other worthy opponents in the division.
Personal life
[edit]Mohammed is a devout Sunni Muslim. He speaks several languages, including English, Somali, and Spanish. He has said that his goal is to open a non-profit facility for troubled youths one day. Mohammed has pursued acting in his spare time. Additionally, he hosts a podcast called "Mornings with Mohammed" and a weekly internet web show on his YouTube channel.
