Larry Murray (born on February 20th 1938) is an American singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist, and producer from Waycross, Georgia, best known for his association with the country rock movement that took place in California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1962 he founded the The Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, a bluegrass outfit that served as a starting point for many future country rockers. Notable members of the Squirrel Barkers were Chris Hillman, Bernie Leadon, & Kenny Wertz, who would all end up as members of The Flying Burrito Brothers. Hillman was also a founder of The Byrds, and Leadon was a founder of The Eagles. The Squirrel Barkers recorded an album entitled Bluegrass Favorites in 1963, where Murray provided dobro and vocals. After the Squirrel Barkers disbanded, Murray formed another bluegrass band called the Green Grass Group (which also featured Chris Hillman) before taking a hiatus from performing to operate a music store in Las Angeles. In 1967 he formed Hearts & Flowers, a little known but highly influential early country rock band that included Rick Cunha, Dave Dawson, and former Squirrel Barker Bernie Leadon. Their mix of country, folk, and psychedelia served as a precursor to the country rock movement that would dominate the California music scene years later. He recorded two albums with Hearts & Flowers, serving as their primary lead vocalist and songwriter, before disbanding. Despite little commercial success, Murray's work with Hearts & Flowers has been cited as influential by country rock artists like The Eagles, Swampwater, The Byrds, and Gib Guilbeau. In 1969, Murray's composition "Six White Horses" was recorded by Tommy Cash and reached #4 on the Billboard country charts and #79 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1971 Murray recorded his first and only solo album entitled Sweet Country Suite for Verve Records. The album features contributions from such notable artists as Gib Guilbeau & Swampwater, JD Souther, and Buddy Emmons.
Aside from his work as a musician, Murray also worked as a television producer and writer. His credits include Country Suite, The Johnny Cash Show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, and The Smothers Brothers Show.
His songs have been recorded by many popular artists, including The Byrds, Johnny Cash, The Dillards, Rita Coolidge, Kris Kristofferson. Swampwater, The Flying Burrito Brothers, David Allen Coe, Tommy Cash, B.W. Stevenson, and others.
