Shamitha Shreekumar (born 1980) (Tamil: ஷமிதா ஸ்ரீகுமார்) is a well known Indian Tamil television and film actress who predominantly works in South Indian tamil television soap operas.[1][2] Her only film appearance in the 2001 film, Pandavar Bhoomi received critical performance for her acting alongside Arun Vijay before gaining more popularity as a serial actress in Tamil Nadu. She also received praise from the audience for her positive roles in TV dramas Sivasakthi, Ponnunjal and also for her negative role in Vijay TV serial, Mouna Ragam.[3]
Personal life
[edit]She married fellow popular television actor, Shreekumar on 28 April 2009 soon after meeting each other for the first time in 2009 with their breakthrough serial, Sivasakthi.[4][5] They also have 2 children.
Career
[edit]Shamitha Shreekumar made her debut into the Kollywood film industry in 2001 without having an interest on acting. She was studying at the first year of the PSC Psychology before receiving a rare opportunity to act in a film.[6] Shamitha was discovered as the new lead actress by film director, Cheran for his film, Pandavar Bhoomi and Shamitha was forced to stop her higher studies as she accepted to act in Cheran's film. Shamitha played dual roles in Pandavar Bhoomi as Jeeva and Thamarai alongside Arun Vijay in the lead role which helped the film to become a commercial hit at the box office.[7] The film was also rated as the second best Tamil film to be released in 2001 following Prashanth starrer, Virumbugiren. Eventually Pandavar Bhoomi also received the second prize award in the 2001 Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Tamil film.
Despite being risen to prominence as a film actress through her debut movie, Pandavar Bhoomi she couldn't able to receive further opportunities to act in films and eventually started to act in television serials.
Shamitha made her television serial debut through Sun TV with playing the lead role as Sakthi alongside Shreekumar in the 2008 mystery TV series, Sivasakthi which went onto become an huge success among the audience. After playing the lead role with Shreekumar in the Sivasakthi serial, she eventually married him in 2009.
Shamitha Shreekumar also played prominent lead roles in few soap operas including Ponnunjal TV serial which aired in Sun TV from 2013 to 2016 and Pillai Nila which also telecast through Sun TV from 2012 to 2014. After playing the positive characters in her previous serials, she went onto play the villainous role (as antagonist jointly with Anand Babu) in the Television soap opera, Mouna Ragam which is currently telecast through Star Vijay Television.[8]
