Manchester City was able to make an immediate return to Division One, thanks to a playoff final victory thanks to a win on a penalty shootout against Gillingham. The dramatic end gave City fans something to cheer about, following some really dark seasons, where the club had faded into the thrid-tier obscurity, all the while Manchester United conquered European football.
