Johann Christian Garlock (April 3, 1672-1764) was a soldier and German Palatine who came to American in the early eighteenth century. He was the son of Hans Garlock.[1][2]
Garlock was born on April 3, 1672, a son of Hans and Anna Maria (Kummer) Gerlach. He and his descendants would take on the name Garlock, and his brother David was the ancestor of the Carlock family. Garlock was educated at Heidelberg University, sometime in the early 1690s.[3]
Garlock and his wife, Anna Margarethe left their homeland in 1709, traveling through Holland, and arriving at St. Catherine's Palatine Camp in London. While living at the camp, his wife and nine-year-old daughter died of disease.[1][3]
Garlock was a captain of a Palatine regiment during an attempted invasion of Canada in 1711.[2]
After the expedition to Canada, Garlock was among the leaders who brought the Palatines from the Hudson River region to the Schoharie in the Mohawk Valley. There, he was the leader and namesake of the settlement called Garlocksdorf[1].[2]
On August 28, 1722, Garlock, along with his Elias, and William and Nicholas York, petitioned the Council of the Colony of New York to obtain a license to purchase land in Schoharie. The license was granted to them on August 31.[4]
Garlock is said to have not get along with the Native Americans. On October 19, 1723, Garlock, along with his sons Theobald and Elias, as well as twenty-four others were granted the Stone Arabia Patent, which consisted of 12,700 acres of land, deeded to them by the natives of the region.[3] The region is located in what is now Montgomery and Fulton Counties, New York.[5] He and several of his children settled on the land.[1][2]
On April 25, 1755, Garlock, along with several others, petitioned the Council for a land grant.[4]
Garlock was the father of Elias, who remained in New York and became a judge, and Theobald, who later removed to Virginia.[1] His son Adam lived in Manheim prior to the Revolution.[2]
In regards to his personality, Garlock is said to have had a "swarthy complextion," had ability "far above average," and that he had received many favors from the governors of New York.[3]
Garlock died in New York in 1764.[3]
