Regular Characters[edit]

Earth Ponies[edit]

The Earth ponies are ponies who have a special connection to nature and animals. They lack the ability to cast magic spells like the unicorn ponies, or the ability to stand on clouds like the pegasus ponies. Usually, they are the basic form of the My Little Pony Toys.

Applejack is a silly pony, always knocking over fences and looking over her shoulder to see where she has been. She loves apples and is frequently found in the Apple Orchard. In her first appearance (Rescue from Midnight Castle), she was one of four ponies to be corrupted by Tirek's Rainbow of Darkness in order to pull his chariot. She was reverted back to normal after Tirek was destroyed. Applejack is the only character in the whole toy line to retain her appearance throughout generations (excluding Generation 3). She then appeared again in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, using her updated Generation 1 Appearance instead of the Generation 3 one. Applejack is very dependable and down-to-earth, but also stubborn and a bit selfish. She wears a brown cowboy hat and is the only one of the six main characters who keeps her mane and tail tied back, instead of letting them fall loose. Applejack comes from a large family of ponies with apple-related names, spread all over Equestria, who oversee apple orchards and run a group of businesses to sell apples and products made from them.[1] Applejack has demonstrated her strength and dexterity on many occasions, and she is also very skilled with a lasso. Applejack's spirit is Honesty.

Alongside the other baby ponies, she has one tooth and they were involved in a feud against Fudgey McSwain and Rocky Ripple.

Cotton Candy is a sweet-lover, who loves sweet things: sweet nectar from the flowers, sweet honey from the bees, and sweet grass from the valley. However, she is also a bit lazy and tries to find her treats a little too close to home. Blossom's flower garden is always a tempting place to grab a snack. In Rescue from Midnight Castle, she was one of four ponies to be corrupted by Tirek's Rainbow of Darkness in order to pull his chariot. She was reverted back to normal after Tirek was destroyed. Her daughter is Baby Cotton Candy. She was again re-released as part of the Generation 3 line, with a significantly altered appearance. Cotton Candy runs the Cotton Candy Cafe where she serves ice cream and sundaes to her friends. She is also a storyteller, enjoying conversation.

Ember was the first baby pony in both the toy lines and the cartoon. Her initial release came in three colours, blue, pink and lavender, none of which had a cutie mark (unlike any other pony in Generation 1). Her TV appearance matched the lavender version. A latter version of the toy, released with an audio book, did have a cutie mark, which was a white star. This toy had the same colours as the earlier lavender version. Unlike the other baby ponies, Ember is never referred to as 'Baby Ember' in the toy line or cartoon.

Sundance is described to be an important Pony to Megan, and Megan dolls were available for purchase paired with Sundance toys. Sundance has no voice artist in the ongoing series - she makes many background appearances, but never speaks.

Truly is a bossy pony who speaks with a Southern American accent. She likes to dress up, but sometimes a little snooty and stubborn. Truly also leads the baby ponies' band and seems to be the one in charge of the nursery.

Pegasus Ponies[edit]

Pegasus ponies all possess wings, and demonstrate great speed both in the air and on foot. They are also seen manipulating the weather in several occasions such as moving clouds to either cause a storm or clear the skies.

She often chases the rain and searches among the clouds for the pony's special friend, the rainbow. Lauren Faust stated that her personality is the basis for the Friendship is Magic incarnation of Rainbow Dash.

Unicorn Ponies[edit]

Unicorn Ponies, as the name suggests, are ponies who have a long horn protruding from their forehead, which glows when their magical powers are used. Generally, unicorns are not as strong as earth ponies. Despite being associated with their magic, a unicorn's horn is strong and sharp enough to have mundane uses.

Buttons loves to decorate her dresses with beautiful buttons. One night, when all the ponies were asleep, she decorated Ponyland with a basket of buttons. In the morning, the ponies looked outside their windows and were delighted to see buttons glittering in fluffy clouds and twinkling in trees. Buttons wove buttons in their hair to finish her unusual decorations. She is also Telekinetic with her magic and is sometimes bossy.

Fizzy is described to be a bit of an airhead but sometimes lovable and laid-back. Her horn can make bubbles from water or air and can move them around, though she doesn't always have complete control.

Glory is described to be the most elegant of all the Unicorn Ponies and moves from place to place with a magical stride, almost as though she had wings. Her magic takes her from kingdom to kingdom in search of a young girl who believes in magic and in unicorns. She also likes jumping and has a daughter named Baby Glory, who is described to be brave. Glory is the inspiration for the Friendship is Magic incarnation of Rarity, alongside Sparkler and Majesty.

Gusty is a unicorn pony who has an impatient streak and is very grouchy. She is also very athletic and brave and can use her horn to summon the wind. She has one daughter named Baby Gusty, who shares the same impatient streak as her mother.

Mimic is a unicorn pony and the descendant of the first unicorn in Ponyland. Mimic has incredible powers far beyond the other unicorn ponies. With the power of the Golden Horseshoes, she is able to levitate things, glow brightly, read minds and see the future. After she fell ill, Megan and the Ponies goes in search for the Golden Horseshoes to restore Mimic's health back to normal.

Moondancer is a Unicorn Pony who debuted in 1983 as part of the Second wave of the Generation 1 Toyline. Moondancer then made her brief appearance in the first My Little Pony Special Rescue From Midnight Castle. Moondancer is one of the four kidnapped ponies in Dream Valley during Scorpan's raid. Out of the four, she is the only Unicorn Pony that was corrupted by Tirek's Rainbow of Darkness in order to pull his chariot. She was reverted back to normal after Tirek was destroyed. She has a daughter named Baby Moondancer, who is very shy. She got kidnapped by Catrina along with the Rainbow of Light to be used as a ransom to force the Bushwoolies to go back to her. Moondancer then later appeared in the Generation 3 toyline, with her appearance becoming an Earth Pony rather than a Unicorn. She is one of Twinkle Twirl's students who love to dance. According to Lauren Faust, Moondancer is meant to be a main character for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. However, due to the loss of almost all of the Generation 1 Names, she is then revamped and remade into Twilight Sparkle. She was only mentioned during the first episode of the series as a tribute.

Ribbon is very mature and motherly to her daughter, Baby Ribbon and is also Telepathic, in which she uses it to contact Megan while she was captured at Tambelon.

Sparkler is a unicorn pony, who is present in the opening sequence of Escape From Catrina, paining the welcome sign for Megan's return and also during the end of the special, wearing a cheerleader outfit and likes to dance. Sparkler is one of the inspirations for the Friendship is Magic incarnation of Rarity, alongside Glory and Majesty.

Twilight is shown to have a special ability to teleport by wishing herself. She also likes to gaze to the stars. In the comics, she was a mysterious little pony who would occasionally appear to grant wishes after dark surrounded by a strange mist. Twilight is the inspiration for the main protagonist of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Twilight Sparkle.

Recurring Characters[edit]

Sea Ponies[edit]

The Sea Ponies are brightly colored seahorse-like creatures who dwell in the rivers and lakes of Dream Valley. They perform a familiarLeitmotif|leitmotif]] of 'shoo-be-doo, shoop shoo-be-doo' whenever they appear, and ocassionally perform more elaborate songs and dance numbers. They are based on the Hippocamp, a mythological creature shared by Phoenicia and Greek mythology. A trio of adult Sea Ponies were released as toys in 1984 and appeared in Rescue at Midnight Castle. A group of six Baby Sea Ponies were released in 1986, and appeared in My Little Pony: The Movie and various episodes of the TV series. All Sea Ponies are female. They do not have cutie marks like other Pony species, but do have coloured sections on their fins.

Beachcomber is a playful baby seapony who appeared in the original series. She only has a brief appearance in some episodes without any speaking roles. Wavedancer is a playful Seapony, who alongside the other seaponies, saved Megan and Applejack from drowning. They gave Megan a shell that allow them to summon the Seaponies.

Flutter Ponies[edit]

Flutter Ponies are ponies with tiny bodies, curly hair, longer legs than regular ponies and fairy-like wings. The Flutter Ponies may appear delicate, but in truth, they possess a powerful ability called the Utter Flutter, which allows them to blow away everything in their path by flapping their wings in a rapid speed. They are rarely seen, preferring to live in seclusion, usually in Flutter Valley. All Flutter Ponies are female. They were all released as toys in 1986 and made their animated debut in My Little Pony: The Movie.

Morning Glory is a sweet and naive Flutter Pony, who helped Sting to fly as well to get Megan in the Human World by flying through the Rainbow. Morning Glory reappeared in the Second Generation of the My Little Pony Toyline released in 1997. In the second generation, Morning Glory is the imaginative one. She thinks up special ways to brighten the day, like picking bouquets of flowers and wrapping them in magical rainbows. She again got released in the Generation 3 toyline as one of the Cutie Cascade Ponies.

Peach Blossom is smart and logical Flutter Pony who is very proper and intelligent. She speaks in a way incomprehensible to most of the others. She uses her small size to her advantage, at one point acting as a spy. Peach Blossom gains an immense vocabulary in The Return of Tambelon.

Rosedust first appeared in 1986 during the fourth year of the Generation 1 Toyline. Rosedust is the Queen and leader of the Flutter Ponies, who always speaks with an odd British accent. She usually wears a dark pink feather on her head. She was in charge of protecting the Sunstone, a giant magical jewel that allows Flutter Valley to flourish.

Princess Ponies[edit]

The Princess ponies appeared in the episode The Quest of the Princess Ponies, in which they were engaged in a bitter feud over which of them should become Queen of Ponyland. They were forced to put aside their differences and work together when Lavan, the Lava Demon stole their magic wands and attempted to seize control of Ponyland. The Princess Ponies eventually decided to share the role of Queen, and rule Ponyland on a rotational basis. They were released as toys in 1987.

Big Brother Ponies[edit]

The Big Brother ponies were the first male ponies in the franchise. They were taller and more stocky than their female equivalents, and had feathered hooves like Clyesdale horses. Each was an Earth Pony. They were released as toys in 1986, and made their only animated appearance in the episode Somnambula, where it was revealed that they spend most of their time racing around the world, with occassional visits to the Paradise Estate.
