The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic was confirmed to have spread to the Republic of Artsakh when its first case was confirmed in April 2020. The infected person was from Mirik community of Kashatagh region. 17 citizen who have contacted with the patient were self-isolated.[1]

Background[edit]

On 12 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that a novel coronavirus was the cause of a respiratory illness in a cluster of people in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, which was reported to the WHO on 31 December 2019.[2][3]

The case fatality ratio for COVID-19 has been much lower than SARS of 2003,[4][5] but the transmission has been significantly greater, with a significant total death toll.[6][4]

March[edit]

The border of the Republic of Artsakh with Armenia has been closed in order to prevent the virus from spreading to the unrecognized republic, which had its general elections on 31 March.

April[edit]

On 7 April, the Ministry of Health of the Artsakh Republic reported about its first coronavirus case after one of two suspected case tested positive for Covid-19.[7]
