Why this template?[edit]

I am struggling to see the logic in this template. My interest is in orienteering, and I can see a need to link to 'similar' activies, but I thought we had a template for that. This template seems to be bringing together all human endeavour which I see as illogical. e.g. why have you ignored judo, boxing, shot put, discus, javelin etc. Please answer here - I am watching the page. "judo, boxing, shot put, discus, javelin" doesn't meet the criteria for racing. This is one template made according to its name and corresponding definitions. --Kslotte (talk) 12:48, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"I thought we had a template for that" ... no, this is currently the only one, feel free to contribute, comment and develop templates for sports and racing. --Kslotte (talk) 12:48, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Collapsible groups can be used to cover more types of racing and sport. --Kslotte (talk) 14:06, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of Template:Orienteering concepts which meets the needs of orienteering and related activities. Perhaps I was thinking too much from the orienteering point of view; and I also view 'racing' as 'competition' which includes field sports. I still think you have made the coverage too wide. Twiceuponatime (talk) 16:42, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also for me it is illogical. --Kasper2006 (talk) 12:48, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Development[edit]

This template needs to be developed to cover more racing forms:

  • Ski and snow
  • Bicycle
  • Other endurance racing

Maybe re-naming it 'Endurance racing' would be a good idea. Feel free to continue working on this or give comments. --Kslotte (talk) 11:39, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Would not biking or skiing be "assisted?" They are going much faster than a runner or a snowshoe racer. Racepacket (talk) 00:44, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you are right. I was thinking of collapsible groups for each of these, where one of the groups are unassisted.. --Kslotte (talk) 09:24, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal[edit]

I am finding the concept of "Unassisted human racing" a little awkward. Racing generally covers running, animal racing, motorsport, as well as cycling, swimming and other forms of racing, such as eating competions or whatever. Grouping together articles such as Wife carrying, and Beer mile with Road running and Foot orienteering is against the spirit of guidelines such as Wikipedia:Navigation templates and Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates - in particular: "If the articles are not established as related by reliable sources in the actual articles, then it is probably not a good idea to interlink them."

What is the intention here? If it is to group together forms of racing, such as in List of forms of racing and Category:Racing sports, then I feel it might be helpful to use the organisation of those as a starting point.

If there is to be an intention to group together forms of racing by humans in which they are not "assisted" - then there needs to be a reliable source to clarity what that means. In Orienteering, the human is assisted by his navigation aids. Without the assistance of these aids he cannot complete the race.

I propose that this template is renamed Forms of running, and includes the different forms of running found in Category:Running and List_of_forms_of_racing#Running. And other templates created for Forms of skiing, Forms of Animal racing, etc, and the whole could be contained in a {{Template group}} called Forms of racing, like this:

Currently the template has to narrow scope and should be expanded. The term "unassisted" sounds bad. I party support your proposal. I would see the main header as "Racing" and that being multilevel navbox. --Kslotte (talk) 10:38, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm comfortable with the main heading being Racing, and sub-headings being Running, Animal racing, Motorsport, etc. I'm suggesting the Template group approach for several reasons:
  • The individual templates can be used separately, or grouped - it gives a greater flexibility of choice for other editors
  • It's easier to create and maintain smaller templates
  • Large templates can dominate small articles like Tower running, which may be better served with just using the Running sub-template
An advantage of using a multilevel navbox is that a useful standard item like List of forms of racing could not easily be repeated on all the subtemplates, so in the case of Tower running, which I am advocating should only have the Running sub-template, then List of forms of racing would not appear. OK, I've made a start. I think it can be developed from here. I'm still not sure if putting them all in the same template is the right way to go, as there are other templates which will now overlap this one, such as {{Bicycle racing}}, but see how it goes.
