Addition of UK link[edit]

I'm restoring the link to the list of United Kingdom world heritage sites. To the unregistered user that keeps deleting it on the grounds that it is "a political entity, not a geographic region", I didn't design the way that these lists are delineated. The point of this template, however, would seem to be to link the reader with the various 'world heritage site lists'. Since the UK site lists are not included in any of the links already on the template (that political region is part of any of the listed geographical locales), I'm adding it back in. Will add the link List of World Heritage Sites by year of inscription in the near future. Opinions are divided as to whether or not it should be linked before it is complete (or at least more complete). Bruinfan12 (talk) 06:42, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

World Heritage in Danger[edit]

UNESCO calls it "World Heritage in Danger" (without "Sites"). So this template should link to World Heritage in Danger or to List of World Heritage in Danger (which is the same at the moment). Also the visible text could be changed from "Sites in danger" to "World Heritage in Danger". bamse (talk) 09:33, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria for regional lists[edit]

This is meant as a summary of this discussion. The aim of the discussion is to establish a division of the world for the purpose of World Heritage lists that is natural (suggestive) to most readers. Basically that means a geographical non-political partition with oversea territories of countries put into the region they are located in (and not into the region of the home country). To keep it readable, please discuss any issues with it elsewhere. Of course corrections are welcome. Thanks. bamse (talk) 14:03, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Africa[edit]

Definition:

  • mainland Africa, Madagascar and nearby islands (Canary Islands, Madeira, Reunion, Seychelles, Saint Helena,...)
    • does include Sinai

Americas[edit]

Definition:

  • mainland North/South America, Caribbean and Greenland plus nearby islands such as Galapagos, Cocos Island, etc.;
    • does not include Hawaii, Easter Island, Iceland, Azores

Europe[edit]

Definition:

  • limited by Ural mountains, Caspian Sea, borders between Russia and Azerbaijan/Georgia, Black Sea, borders between Turkey and Bulgaria/Greece, Mediterranean, North Atlantic, Arctic Ocean
    • does include Azores, Iceland, Malta
    • does not include European part of Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Greenland, Asian part of Russia

Northern Europe[edit]

Eastern Europe[edit]

  • use UNSD's definition, meaning basically all Eastern Bloc countries excluding the Baltic Countries, former Yugoslavia and Albania
  • does not include: Asian part of Russia or countries in Caucasus

Western Europe[edit]

Asia[edit]

Northern and Central Asia[edit]

  • defined as Asian part of Russia + 5 "-stans" in Central Asia (very common definition)

Reasoning for inclusion of some regions/states in certain lists[edit]

  • Hawaii (in Oceania):
    • Is located in Polynesia, which is part of Oceania.
  • Easter Island (in Oceania):
    • Is located in Polynesia as well.
  • Greenland (in Americas):
    • physiogeographically part of the American continent
    • ties with Europe (Denmark) are political only, which is irrelevant here
  • Russia (split in European and Asian part; Asian part joined with Central Asian region):
    • Russia is clearly defined as being split between the European and Asian continents. Regions in either continents belong in the respective list.
  • Cyprus (in Asia):
    • Is located just south of Anatolia, a part of Western Asia.
  • Turkey (in Asia):
    • Is comprised mainly of Anatolia
  • Iceland and Azores (in Europe):
    • Situated on the mid-atlantic ridge (i.e. partially in America) but have strong cultural and political ties to Europe
  • Andorra
UNSD divisions are destined to be used for their internal use only. Using them here is extremely unhelpful. You never know where to find the country you are looking for: Switzerland? Bulgaria? Greece? Turkey? The UK? Germany? Romania? Spain? Portugal? All of these examples of countries are commonly included in 2 or more regions. There should be one article for every continent, really, to see the wider context (and to plan a trip), and then good lists on every country.--89.128.236.143 (talk) 09:31, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
They are based on UNSD divisions, but you can see that we've made modifications aside from that. There is an index located at List of World Heritage Sites which allows people to see what is available and which notable countries are located there. That article is also linked from the main infobox at the bottom of any UNESCO article. EricLeb01 (Page | Talk) 02:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This division is used only by the statistics division, however, and for its internal use only.--89.128.236.143 (talk) 02:05, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
