Vandalism

[edit]

Template has been vandalized. According to discussion at Template talk:User en#Protected, this template is being protected to prevent mass vandalism. If you would like to make any changes to this template, please post your suggestions on this talk page, so that an Administrator can implement them. Thank you. The Spanish Wikipedia makes use of the following statement on the es Babel template:
La lengua nativa de este usuario es el español.
Which translates to the following in English:
The native language of this user is Spanish.
The current statement used on the English Wikipedia seems less appropriate as it translates to:
This user has Spanish as a maternal language.
I suggest that we change the English Wikipedia's es template to make use of the Spanish Wikipedia's statement. Chef Ketone 04:09, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why is permanent protection necessary? Even Template:User en isn't protected, and that is surely much a much higher-profile vandalism target. I would think semiprotection would be enough.

Anyway, I suggest that the interwiki links found on, for example, es:Plantilla:·Usuarios ic tlahtōlli (es) be included in a <noinclude> section on this page. --Saforrest 17:44, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

text changing

[edit]

Hi, I wanna add this: {}. That will let users to have their own text. thanks. --Emperor Walter Humala · ( talk? · help! ) 21:28, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to spanish template

[edit]

I am a native spanish speaker and it seems more appropiate to me that the text displayed on the template should be as follows: "La lengua materna de este usuario es el español."

In english it would read: "The native language of this user is spanish"

Secrecy Sensor 18:59, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But that is not the standard version agreed upon years ago by the creators of Babel. All userboxes should read "This user is a native speaker of English", it shouldn't be speaker though it should be "This user communicates with a native level of English" -Babelious 16:12, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The template should read:

<div style="float:left;border:solid #6EF7A7 1px;margin:1px">
style="width:45px;height:45px;background:#6EF7A7;text-align:center;font-size:14pt" | es

Usage
*DO NOT copy the source of this userbox, or subst: it. Otherwise you risk putting your userpage in a miscategorization, and/or generating duplicate templates/userboxes.
*Put this userbox on your userpage like this:
*Put this userbox in Babel like this
*This template will automatically add your page to the following categories:
**:Category:User es
**:Category:User es-N

<!-- PLEASE ADD CATEGORIES BELOW THIS LINE, THANKS. -->

<!-- PLEASE ADD INTERWIKIS BELOW THIS LINE, THANKS. -->

</noinclude>

-Babelious 16:09, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done - this would need to be added to the pages of literally _thousands_ of userboxes, and it's not been that much of a problem historically. It's also easy enough to take someone out of a category; just make sure you actually go directly for the category tag rather than screwing up the rest of their code. (incidentally, subst does not cause miscategorization) —Random832 16:56, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Convert to userbox

[edit]

editprotected

Update syntax to match modern user boxes, split documentation. Code below, just replace the whole thing.

<noinclude>pp-template</noinclude><includeonly>{{#ifeq:{categories}|no||}}</includeonly><noinclude>documentation</noinclude>

Edit Req

[edit]

editrequest Could the template be updated to the code below:

<noinclude>pp-templatedocumentation</noinclude>

This is to change it to use the userbox-level template which is used by other similar userboxes. Thanks -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:33, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fix translation

[edit]

Hi. I´ve noticed the translation (or better, the text) is wrong. It says "Este usuario tiene el español como lengua materna." It should say "La lengua materna de este usuario es el español", or "El español es la lengua materna de este usuario". I have no idea how to fix it, if I can or who to tell. Can someone do it or at least discuss the change? Thanks. --Andreateletrabajo (talk) 03:15, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-native Spanish speaker

Template-protected edit request on 1 September 2020

[edit]

Don't italicise the text on all es-x templates. All language templates seem to have unitalicised text with the notable exception of this one. There doesn't seem to be a reason for this and consistency is always preferable. Thanks! Bernat (talk) 13:06, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done: See MOS:FOREIGNITALIC. This template uses Lang, which italicizes text per MOS. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:07, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95: Thanks for your quick and useful reply! We'd ideally want all these templates to use Lang, but why don't we just set parameter italics to no for these user boxes? I'd understand if you just want to follow the MOS, yet this does seem like a reasonable exception – seeing how there's no need to highlight the language as being different from English, which I assume is the MOS' main goal. Cheers. Bernat (talk) 16:35, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95: I've just seen that at least User fr and User de use lang with italics set to no, setting a precedent for what could be done here. Bernat (talk) 16:43, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a local consensus discussion somewhere that says all of these "User xx" language templates should use plain text for foreign-language text, I'm happy to change this one. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:10, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jonesey95, MOS:FOREIGNITALIC does not necessarily apply to userspace, so that is not a valid argument. The vast majority of Babel templates (see Wikipedia:Babel and its foreign versions on hundreds of other wikis) use non-italicized text, and mixing them looks terrible. As this is a wiki, we can be WP:BOLD and fix things that are broken (like this template was slightly broken with the introduction of lang without disabling italics) without discussing them first. —Kusma (t·c) 16:24, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Kusma removed italics from User de after it had been italicized for four years, as far as I can tell. Was there a discussion that prompted this change? – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:29, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jonesey95, I remember that discussion. I said to myself "hey, my userpage looks stupid, with some Babel templates in italics and some not", checked that the "lang" tagging seemed to have been done for accessibility reasons that I fully agree with, and fixed the tagging by removing italics (while keeping the language marking) as used on every other Wikimedia wiki in existence (all projects, all languages). Most other Babel templates (User da, User pt, User it-1 for a few examples) on this wiki also have always used upright font, and might benefit from having lang added, but not from being italicized. Do you have any substantial reasons to prefer that this particular template should use italics, while most others do not? —Kusma (t·c) 19:30, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What now, @Kusma? I'm unaware of the procedure, but if we need a third opinion I would imagine that another edit request would be enough? (Needless to say, I agree with everything you've said so far.) Bernat (talk) 12:44, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bernat Tortajada, I was hoping we'd get a reply from the original responder. @Jonesey95: I'm happy to implement this change myself, but I don't quite understand whether you still have objections. —Kusma (t·c) 18:28, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I was still waiting for a link to a consensus discussion that would override MOS for these templates. If the template is modified as requested above, I will not revert the change. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:15, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have implemented the change for the Spanish language templates. Happy to do others on request. —Kusma (t·c) 11:25, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
