Separate /doc page

[edit]

To editor Uanfala: we've already had this discussion and nothing has yet been decided. So the only thing we really have is WP:Template documentation, which supports separate, transcludable /doc pages. There is no policy, guideline, how-to guide or even an essay that supports not making a separate /doc page for any reason. None that I know of, anyway, so if you've found one, then please let me know. Until then, I shall continue to create /doc pages as I've done for nearly 10 years. Yes, we've had this discussion before: none of the reasons for having a separate doc page apply here: template's not protected, its doc page doesn't get edited frequently (if at all), and it's not used on many pages. There are no benefits at all to offset the inconvenience of a separate page here. Thanks. – Uanfala (talk) 19:22, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's still a net benefit, which is why there is no policy, no guideline, no how-to guide, not even an essay against creating separate, transcludable /doc pages. The advantages (some possibly in the future) outweigh any perceived disadvantages. Paine Ellsworthed. put'r there  20:11, 2 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Don't understand your edit warring, User:Uanfala, you have no leg to stand on unless you provide a policy, a guideline or some other Wikipedia principle based on community consensus that justifies your reverting my /doc page addition. Are you going to follow me around and revert some of the /doc pages I create based on your POV opinion? Are you going to get them deleted, too? I have grown to respect your opinions up to now especially in the areas of languages, dialects and such, and I really feel a bit venerated by your recent actions. But don't you have anything better to do than to shadow my edits? Paine Ellsworthed. put'r there  20:12, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are no guidelines either way here. I've been meaning to start a discussion on the talk page of WP:DOC so that we all could come up with some explicit dos and don'ts on this matter. I'm sorry if you feel bad about me bypassing the doc subpage at Template:Indo-Aryan languages too, but the situation there is no different from the situation over here. – Uanfala (talk) 21:34, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You have been given the recommendation from the Wikimedia Foundation, and you were introduced to the how-to guide, both of which support creation of separate /doc pages. It is unfortunate that you choose to ignore them, defy them and go against their recommendations. The VP discussion should have given you what you needed to make the right decision. Disappointing. We'll see how it goes. Paine Ellsworthed. put'r there  05:43, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS. In your research, Uanfala, you might find Template talk:Documentation and its archives to be helpful to you. Paine Ellsworthed. put'r there  05:59, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a specific thread at Template talk:Documentation or its archives that you would recommend? I had a browse, but couldn't find anything relevant. As for the rest of your comment, I sometimes feel like we're living in different wikipedias. The how-to guide is at WP:DOC (incidentally, it has the status of an essay as it's neither a policy nor a guideline). It says separate doc subpages are often created (it doesn't say they must be created) and it lists circumstances where a separate page is recommended. Neither of these circumstances apply to this template. The "recommendation from the Wikimedia Foundation" is a statement from the ancient days – this was discussed aat the village pump and it turned out it was based on a technical limit that hasn't existed since 2008. – Uanfala (talk) 11:21, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
