Palestine

I have been quite active improving the Israeli section, and I made the separate Palestinian section hack (that shows the Israeli section below the Palestinian one, due to an absence of Palestinian links). I noticed that the label for the Palestinian section has changed names a couple of times, in part due to myself, so I would like to know what the name should be. Currently it has alternated between Palestinian territories and Palestine, State of. I myself consider that the term "Palestinian territories" describes a geographical entity, while I see "State of Palestine" as describing a political one - and so I prefer PT since this page as being about geography, not politics. I also see a simple "Palestine" as a good solution, possibly a compromise between the two. Are there any other opinions, so that this issue could be decided? Many thanks, Mapeh (talk) 18:04, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

I think Palestine is the most neutral label and it should be used. —EncMstr (talk) 06:55, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
Actually, considering all sources here show both modern-day Israel, modern-day Palestine, and the historical Mandate of Palestine, would it not be simpler to merge both the Israeli and the Palestinian sections together? Mapeh (talk) 20:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

apple maps

As we tested on nl-wikipedia, apple maps seems to be url compatible with google maps, so you can also use the zoom parameter for the zoomlevel, the type parameter for maps or satellite, and others. Maybe you want to implement it the same as we did on nl-wikipedia. Akoopal (talk) 19:48, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Update the Google terrain links to work with the new Google maps. These new links will then be backwards compatible with the old Google maps. Currently one needs an additional click if using the new Google maps. Jidanni (talk) 22:40, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

How to add "Geo Hack" map in some Wikipedia template? I don't want to draw any SVG maps. so please tell me how use Geo Hack or other maps in Wikipedia templates to identify location.-Surprizi (talk) 10:48, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Elevation

Most of the maps would open with a high POV, the bing auto zooms nicely to surround the points referenced on a page.
When opening in google earth (iPad) it starts at elevation 50 which doesn't do much for katoomba 800m up, not that you're to know but a little elevation wouldn't hurt in the GE case --Dave Rave (talk) 23:15, 30 May 2014 (UTC) Narrow Neck preview

WikiMiniAtlas toolserver->labs

Hi! The WikiMiniAtlas map will have to be changed to point to the new labs version of the WMA at http://wma.wmflabs.org thanks! --Dschwen 02:43, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

And now it is removed. Without any statement or discussion here. Odd. --Dschwen 01:13, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
What is removed, and from where? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:49, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Meta:WikiMiniAtlas was embedded on the geohack page. I don't know who has access to that page nowadays. It might be added through Javascript though (the template). There is still a placeholder div on Template:GeoTemplate. --Dschwen 22:08, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Mayday, the toolserver is gone now. Anybody with geohack access, please make that change. --Dschwen 17:41, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Search box and real upper right image required

Hello, two things i would really like on this page:

  1. a search box somewhere at the top of the page. I have to check the global average position of many locations on the world map e.g. East China Sea, the Bering Sea, the North Sea, the Grand Banks, the Patagonian Shelf, the Arafura Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria, and the Siberian Shelf. For this I use the upper right hand image. Now one continuously has to search for the Wikipedia page, hit the coordinates, copy the image, go back to do a new search (or work with tabs). When there is a search box, like in Google Earth, one can type the query directly here. If no coordinates are present, an error message is given.
  2. a real image at the top right of the page. The image now is composed of a world map with a superimposed dot somewhere on it. Copying the map with your browser into your personal wysiwyg html notes (with Seamonkey for instance) does not work, the dot is not copied. One has to use things like Snapcrab to copy that part of the screen. The sides have to be adjusted, very tedious. If it could be a real image, that can be directly copied from your browser, the process of searching the positions of many locations for your personal notes could be so much faster.

Thanks! Jgamleus (talk) 18:42, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

@Jgamleus: It's two images, one for the map (File:Earthmap1000x500.jpg, 360 wide by 180 high) and one for the dot (File:Locator Dot.png, 8 wide by 8 high) that is superimposed on the map one. These two images are used on every coordinates links page. If we were to produce a composite image which included map and dot in the same file, that was different for every different set of coordinates, the number of images that would be necessary to create could run into the millions. It's just not practical. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:06, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks for your answer. But I am not asking to generate millions of images. I am only asking that as soon as a user hits the coordinates of something on a Wikipedia page and comes to this GeoHack page with the place of the thing indicated by the red dot on the world map, that then *only one* image is *generated*, with the red dot superimposed on the right place. I am thinking of a php-script, that can do the thing. This way Wikipedians can copy such an image with a dot much faster. Perhaps there are more places in Wikipedia where images are superimposed on each other. Do you think this can be done? Jgamleus (talk) 21:58, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
There are indeed lots of places where images are superimposed; the pushpin maps on articles like Sale Metrolink station for instance, or the home & away colours at the bottom of the infobox for Blackburn Rovers F.C. When images are created for use in a Wikipedia page, they are retained pretty much permanently: if images were created that were specific to a particular set of coordinates, the number of images - and hence the disk space - would rapidly grow. For such a feature to be implemented, there's nothing we can usefully do here, you would need to file a feature request at bugzilla: --Redrose64 (talk) 22:52, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks for your answer Redrose64. So also if images are generated by a php-script in order to be shown in a Wikipedia page, they are retained pretty much permanently and not thrown away immediately after being sent to the user? As a computer scientist, this sounds like an error to me that should be corrected. Jgamleus (talk) 15:49, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
Consider the globe image in the box at the top of this page. It looks like this and the full path to that is http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9a/Erioll_world.svg/60px-Erioll_world.svg.png which is a 60px-wide PNG representation of the SVG original. If I were to display that smaller - say 40px wide like this - the servers would create another PNG representation of the SVG, but which is 40px wide, at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9a/Erioll_world.svg/40px-Erioll_world.svg.png. Those two PNG files will be retained for ever, or at least until File:Erioll world.svg is deleted.
I can't control how the MediaWiki software works. If you feel that it could be done better, again it's bugzilla:. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:09, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks for clarifying Redrose64. I understand the need to retain images in different formats, it's better not to send a 23 MB image, when a 500kB version suffices. But then we are talking about *some* instances of an image. Suppose *many* instances of that image, each with slightly different size, would be required, how would Wikipedia solve that problem? Before I go to Bugzilla, is there any place in Wikipedia known to you where images are dynamically generated, for instance with php-scripts, not statically retrieved? Jgamleus (talk) 16:58, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
Each different rendered size has a separate copy stored on the servers. I don't think that there is any dynamic image generation; you could ask at WP:VPT. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:25, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Ok, I read in Yahoo Answers that "Wikipedia is based on a piece of wiki software called MediaWiki, which is written in PHP. Source:http://www.mediawiki.org". And at http://php.net/manual/en/function.imagecopymerge.php there is a function to merge images in PHP. It should theoretically be possible then to generate images and sending them to the user without storing them in Wikipedia. I'll go to the places you mentioned. Thanks a lot! Jgamleus (talk) 18:20, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Can a search box be put in the GeoTemplate? (remark nr. 1). Thanks! Jgamleus (talk) 18:20, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

One of the three GeoHack maintainers (and apparently sole cleanup crew) here. My plan is to change the coordinate link to a drop down with 4 or 5 links for 80+% of most used services, copy-to-clipboard functionality, and our mapping implementation. This should keep complainers away from any GeoHack revamps (so many dead services).
As for you questions: 1) We could use <InputBox> tag, but it would be weird for Commons users to be searching Wikipedia. 2) The foundation does not provide resources to render and store maps (+various sizes) for the 4.7 million coordinate on Commons. Also the lead platforms (Android/iOS) only support copying text and URLs, although you can download images. — Dispenser 00:24, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Marker positions for same place on world map differ in different languages

Hello,

when one puts some coordinates in the English page for the Patagonian Shelf and then clicks on the coordinates of the edited page, the resulting English page shows a marker on the world map at quite a different location than if one would do the same in the Spanish page for the Patagonian Shelf. The differing result is the same if one chooses on the resulting English page the Spanish language. This means editors of the English page and Spanish page end up using different coordinates to give their readers the same indication of a location.

Apparently the marker and the world map that GeoHack chooses for their composed image depend on the language you choose. It seems to me the world maps are not all quite the same. Perhaps this is the cause. Can this be corrected?

Thanks! Jgamleus (talk) 02:01, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

First, English give 46° W, 63° S and Spanish gives 50° W, 62° S, so they differ there. Second, the enwiki and eswiki vertical offset are both wrong (97px and 90px) and should be 94px (180px / 2 + 8px / 2). However, es:Template:GeoTemplate is protected and hasn't been updated in 4 years. — Dispenser 00:56, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

UFI of Geonames to the GeoHack?

Hello,

I compiled User:Keysanger/sandbox1 from the Geonames database. Can I use, for example, the UFI (=3880801) of "Quebrada del Mal Paso" in {{coord}} in order to obtain this map: http://www.geonames.org/3880801/ from GeoHack?. There is a lot of maps in GeoHack, but this one shows the administrative region, the name, and the coordinates of the feature. --Keysanger (Talk) 15:04, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Great Britain - "More OS maps" section

In the table of alternative services listed for Great Britain there are five services listed as available from openstreetmap showing old OS maps. None of these services seem to be working (the first 4 produce a "403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server." warning and the fifth option does go to openstreetmap but displays an all black map...).

I've explored openstreetmap a bit and there does not seem to be a way of viewing any old OS maps there.

Should these services be removed from the table, or am I missing something in openstreetmap? Robevans123 (talk) 09:31, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Regarding the fifth one, changing the last part of the URL from &layers=B0 to &layers=0BF gives a street map, which is much more useful. There may be further options, see Export; and Sharing a link to the maps. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:25, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
Of course, we could ask Pigsonthewing (talk · contribs) who added those openstreetmap links. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:31, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Google Maps links display distances in feet & miles rather than m & km

Because Google Maps links are to the US site maps.google.com, distances are displayed in Imperial/US customary units rather than the SI metres and kilometres used in almost all other countries. Should this be changed?

A webpage states that the required URL parameter for metric distances is "doflg=pt", but I couldn't get the change to stick.

Incorrect identification of location

There has been a place misidentified on the WikiMiniAtlas, and I would correct the problem, but I have no idea how to do so. So, I am asking for assistance. The article, New Albion has included several fringe theories. One of them is Whale Cove, Oregon. In that section, the link to the WikiMiniAtlas coordinates takes the reader to a map with the name New Albion posted there in Oregon. One must zoom in a little to see the label associated with the dot. There is no place officially recognized in Oregon as New Albion. I suggest the name, Whale Cove, be put there instead of New Albion. If you concur and would like to do so, please do.Horst59 (talk) 00:18, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

  • The named point on the map does not refer specifically to the name of the place, but rather to the Wikipedia article in which the coordinates of that point are given. Thus it says New Albion because it links to the article "New Albion". Try viewing the article Whale Cove (Oregon) and then call up the WikiMiniAtlas from the coordinates at the top right-hand corner of the page. There you will see a point on the named map named New Albion, which links to the named article. •••Life of Riley (TC) 18:26, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Recent changes

Legoktm Where were these changes discussed? They have broken the region: parameter of {{coord}} - the region-specific section is supposed to appear to the right of the "Global services" block, instead, it's way down the page and all the inapplicable region blocks are shown too. --Redrose64 (talk) 02:12, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

See #Using Live Wiki Maps above and wikitech-ambassadors. And fixed, sorry. Legoktm (talk) 06:55, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
'#Using Live Wiki Maps' does not discuss these changes. The other link you provide is a mailing list. Where is the GeoURI? Where is the Geo microformat? Why are the most commonly used maps (Google and OSM; as determined through stats and/ or user testing) no longer prominent? I'm going to revert, until consensus is demonstrated here. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:48, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
The fact that someone posted here over a month ago and no one bothered to respond indicated to me that no one cared, so I went ahead and did it. The mailing list post explains where the motivation and design came from - the Russian Wikipedia. Reverting is fine until we can fix the issues, but it probably would have been easier for you to fix the missing features:
  • Isn't embedding a map that is Wikimedia-hosted using OSM data better than linking to third-party services (Google/OSM)? In any case, I think we can bump those two up to the top of the "Global services" table.
  • Is the Geo microformat the stuff inside the <span class="geo"> tag?
  • We can re-add GeoURI to the right-side infobox if you think it's that important.
Legoktm (talk) 18:29, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Just a comment, but if it's decided to restore the changes and you need space in the right-hand box for the region code and the GeoURI (and anything else), in my opinion we can lose the unimportant "Antipodes" info in that box, and probably the "Object" heading as well. Deor (talk) 19:00, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Yes, someone posted here over a month ago, but they didn't forewarn about the changes you made, they simply asked "Are there any objections to inserting a box at the top with a live map?". The geo microformat is represented by the three spans/ classes in <span class="geo"><span class="latitude" title="Latitude">{latdegdec}</span>, <span class="longitude" title="Longitude">{londegdec}</span></span> . Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:18, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: so was there something wrong with the microformats in [1]? It looks properly marked up to me, but I'm not an expert. Legoktm (talk) 07:43, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Pigsonthewing, Deor, thanks for discussing this. What features do you think are currently missing in the Legoktm's implementation that blocks the new maps service? I would love to work on addressing them. Also, I am actively working on the <maps> tag to allow maps usage directly in the articles, making it possible to do it all in-wiki without external wmflabs service. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks! --Yurik (talk) 19:59, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

Other than those I mentioned above, I haven't looked to see what was missing. You have this about face; any proposed removals should be discussed (or at the very least, made one at a time, with a meaningful edit summary). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:18, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
I much prefer the current status to its predecessor. For me, the biggest issue is the huge map: I virtually always use the Acme Mapper link in "Global services" (I gave up on Google, except for route-planning, when they did away with the classic format last year), and like many of the other mapping links, Acme is above the fold in Andy's version but below the fold in Legoktm's version. Of second-highest importance to me is the coordinates display, which appears at top left in Andy's and at right in Legoktm's; I don't care about its placement, as long as it's somewhere. I don't particularly care which map is provided or about the other issues discussed here. Nyttend (talk) 02:19, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I get that everyone has their own workflows and stuff, but isn't the most important part of this template/GeoHack the actual embedded map? The WMA embed has been broken for who knows how long... Legoktm (talk) 07:19, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I also think of geohack primarily as a map service, and secondary as links, but both might be needed. Pigsonthewing, do I read you correctly that you oppose to things being removed, not added? So in your opinion, we should re-add the map, and carefully preserve all other features on the page until discussed one at a time? Where would be the best place to discuss the geohack design? I suspect not many people actually know about this page. --Yurik (talk)
I object to things - many of which have been added after extensive discussion, and consensus being reached - being removed without discussion and consensus. I object specifically to the removal of the items I mentioned above. Discussion should be held here, but proposals for major changes should be flagged via WP:Centralized discussion. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:34, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I definitely don't view GeoHack "primarily as a map service", and I suspect that our readers don't, either. When I want to see details of the location of a place, I most often use the link to the Google satellite view, the Acme version of USGS topographical maps, the British Ordnance survey maps, or some other link on the page. We can replace the nonfunctional WikiMiniAtlas map with the other map if you want, but both maps tend to omit useful detail in their coverage of the less-inhabited areas of the world. Deor (talk) 12:48, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I've always considered the template a collection of links to mapping services, with the maps merely being meant as general guides so you know what region of the world is being talked about. "I get that everyone has their own workflows and stuff" — that's why I framed my response as "it messes me up" and why I didn't start a "please revert these changes" discussion several days ago: I don't know how much it affects other people, and I hesitated to rely merely on my own workflow as a reason for proposing a reversion. Since someone else had started this discussion, I figured I'd throw it in, if for no other reason than giving an example of one workflow that got interrupted. Given the past history of people disputing which link(s) to display at the top of the list of maps (see Template talk:GeoTemplate/Archive 12#Featuring proprietary content, for example), which demonstrates people's active interest in featuring some link in a really prominent place (even though they were disputing which link(s) to feature), I don't think we ought to get rid of those links entirely or make them significantly more obscure. Note that I'm using a wide laptop screen (HP Pavilion 15, with a screen 13-5/8 inches wide and 7-5/8 inches tall), which causes text and everything else to appear higher up (because each line is longer, so un-forced line breaks are fewer), so I expect that people using less-wide screens will experience the same thing more profoundly. Nyttend (talk) 03:20, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, that's really helpful for me to understand how people typically use the page. I think the changes I've implemented below should help not break people's workflows while still adding new features. Legoktm (talk) 08:19, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Sandbox

I've added a feature to GeoHack that allows us to test with Template:GeoTemplate/sandbox by adding &sandbox=1 to the GeoHack URL, for example Lyon. I've made the following changes to the sandbox based on the feedback here:

  • Removed Antipodes, added Geo URI in its place
  • Move Google Maps and OSM links to the top of the table so they're easier for people to use
  • Add region and zoom values.

Please let me know what you think, and if any other useful info is missing. Legoktm (talk) 08:09, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

I assume that the big white box at the top is where a map would appear? As long as it's there, I'm still opposed, because like your last edit to the template itself, the map is pushing everything else below the fold and making all of the links much less significant. No comment on the metadata that Andy mentioned, because I'm not familiar enough with them to make an intelligent comment. Nyttend (talk) 21:40, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
Yes, are you not seeing a map there? At least on my screen (7in tall) I still see all the regional services and up to arctic.io in the global services above the fold. But let me test with some smaller screen sizes and get back to you. Legoktm (talk) 17:26, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
Nyttend, I agree that the list of links is important, but we shouldn't prioritize some links above others depending on the screen size and where in alphabet they are. Because otherwise by that logic we cannot add any new maps service links that would be positioned before your favorite link, as it could also push it down beyond the screen edge. Also, the en community can try the same approach as ru community, and put the most common links above all others, thus possibly solving your usecase.
I think it is better to add the map above all the links - the map provides some quick information (summary) and could answer the location question for at least some users right away, without going to external services. This is similar to how articles are structured - summary first, and details with external links later. I created a phab:T124113 task to get some data so that we have a better idea of geohack usage. I think we should try to make it useful to all users - both novice and tech-savy. Also, we should eventually let users customize this experience - e.g. perhaps by automatically taking you to the map service that you like, instead of showing geohack. --Yurik (talk) 02:04, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
legoktm, thanks for doing all this work. itwiki & ruwiki just fixed their js script, see here. --Yurik (talk) 02:11, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
My objections were twofold: it impairs me, and it go against what others have wanted in previous discussions. As I noted above, I'm not attempting to make my impairment trump other stuff: I just wanted to know that it would be considered. And I wanted to ensure that some links be shown. See my comments above: I figured that if my wide screen didn't show the below-the-map links, nobody else's would show them either. Since all of you have proven that I was wrong, I don't have any reason to oppose on the "it impairs others" issue, and I'm not going to start trying to force you to accommodate my needs. Nyttend (talk) 02:54, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Nyttend, when you look at this link, how far down do you see? I also have a fairly small 13.3" wide screen, and I see Google Earth as the last link without scrolling. --Yurik (talk) 03:26, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
What Nyttend sees
At the very bottom of the screen is "Service/Map/Satellite/Topo/Other" and "Service/Map/Aerial/Other", the headers for the two columns. I see no links whatsoever. I wonder why I so badly misunderstood? Nyttend (talk) 03:35, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Nyttend, I just checked with common resolutions. It seems you have 768px height display, which is about 44% of the web users, so we should take it into account (unless the majority are mobile phones, in which case the number would be significantly lower). The question remains if this is a common enough scenario for a person with <800px height to use a link (that's why i added height logging to the KPI requirements). Regardless, I think we could make the map a bit shorter, and remove two table rows of the card on the right. What rows do you think are not needed there, and should be moved somewhere else or removed altogether? --Yurik (talk) 04:15, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
"Card on the right" — do you mean the box with "Coordinates" at the top, immediately below Lyon (edit | Report an error)? In the Lyon example you gave, the "Article" seems rather extraneous, and the other fields below the map could really be shrunken in width; could we reduce the space a little? Plus, if we shrink the huge map's height a little bit, we could always reduce it in proportion, reducing the width a little bit as well, so we'd have a little more width in the right-side box to work with: that way, we'd have the width to put both DMS and decimal coords in the same line, which together with removing "Article", gives us two extra lines. Nyttend (talk) 04:26, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Correct. legoktm, what do you think? --Yurik (talk) 21:35, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Cross hairs

This probably is not the place to discuss this- but if not please redirect. The problem lies with the coord template used on every article. I click on it, and arrive at Geohack and the wonderful new map. I find the coordinate is tens of metres out. What I want to do is move the map slightly- right click to get a where am I?, and add the correction to the page. At the moment I have a rubber-band wrapped around my monitor to help me! Could someone overlay the map with a graticule (right click on/off if need be).

On the right click we could have the choice to have the where am in csv lat long, full coord and commons location format- and with gestures put in the heading= parameter, may be.

A second really useful feature for a content writer, would to have the open street maps Commons Overlay to show available photographs in the vicinity. On occasion a overlay of the articles in the region could be useful on an overlay, but that is low down on the wishlist.

Geohack is a useful tool in many ways- but with a few extra facilities (I think about what later) it could become more central to content writing. Clem Rutter (talk) 09:50, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Additional UK maplink - National Biodiversity Network

National Biodiversity Network make a roadmap/OS map, depending on scale, available with URLs such as https://data.nbn.org.uk/imt/?boundary=#0-4.377,51.713,-4.166,51.787 which looks a little like Long & Lat for the top right and a long & lat for the bottom left of the displayed map. Is this something that could be added to the Great Britain section? By the looks, it'll correct a URL which has an aspect ratio it's not expecting. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:29, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Kartographer extension

From a post on the OSM-talk mailing list:

Russian Wikipedia just replaced all of their map links in the upper right corner (geohack) with the <maplink> Kartographer extension! Moreover, when clicking the link, it also shows the location outline, if that object exists in OpenStreetMap with a corresponding Wikidata ID (ways and relations only, no nodes). My deepest respect to my former Interactive Team colleagues and volunteers who have made it possible! (This was community wishlist #21) Example - city of Salzburg (click coordinates in the upper right corner, or in the infobox on the side): ru:Зальцбург

Note that the kind of additional links provided by Geohack are still available under the "More details" link.

What are our plans for switching to this service? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 07:32, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Great Britain - getamap service no longer exists

Ordnance Survey has closed getamap and replaced it with a new service, OS Maps. Like getamap, it can generate a view of a place based on x/y coordinates like https://osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/50.9126070560,-1.3705891493,14 where the first value is x position, second is y position and third is zoom level. 14 gives a large scale view suitable for most points, lower numbers give smaller scale views. Basic map is public to all users with no registration.

Order of popular icons Suggestion

Hi, the additional of 4 icons to popular map services at the top is a welcome change. On my narrow browser window, though, they appear in two columns:

Bing Google Maps
Google Earth OSM

I think would look better if the Google ones were on the same row. How about changing the order to OSM, Bing, Google Maps and Google Earth? Listing OSM first also encourages use of open formats, and Google Earth last because it opens a different program than the other three.

Thanks,

Bing Maps Ordnance Survey link

A recent edit (possibly this by User:Dispenser) has removed the link for British coordinates to the Bing OS Maps view. This link was valuable. These maps are different from these provided by the Ordnance Survey link, and are the best topographical maps for Britain. I often used this link to produce coordinate values for Wikipedia articles, by manually editing the URL that it generated. This is much more difficult without the link. Can we have this back please? Sorry about that. I only noticed the language code en-gb as being different from the global links when culling. I've added added the OS layer link back. Ideally, everything would be in m:WikiMiniAtlas privacy be damned. — Dispenser 04:19, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

Do we really need a big map on this page? The whole point of this is to direct the user to a map of their choice, not to force our choice on them. "The whole point of this is to direct the user to a map of their choice" is there any evidence that that's what most users want? I strongly suspect that they just want to see a map. All coordinates incomplete?

Unless I am misunderstanding something, the coordinates provided in the GeoTemplate (as well as GeoHack coordinates) seem to allow specification of two dimensions (latitude and longitude, or equivalent). I live in a world of three spatial dimensions, and I would like to be able to specify the third coordinate. For instance, all geodetic coordinates are incomplete unless one specifies a height above the reference ellipsoid, which the template does not seem to support. What are the prospects for including a field for geodetic height or geocentric radius? Thank you. JeanLucMargot (talk) 05:57, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

@JeanLucMargot: It would be possible to add this to GeoHack and the template, but I'm not sure if you'd want to do that since (a) GeoHack is probably being replaced by Kartographer at some point*, and (b) it wouldn't actually display on a two-dimensional map so it wouldn't be particularly helpful for most users. The elevation data for geographic objects can always be added to Wikidata items with the elevation above sea level (P2044) property.
* I'm not sure when this would be, since the rollout is indefinitely suspended or something and the replacement of GeoHack here would be dependent on enwiki volunteer editors. Jc86035 (talk) 08:14, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
Geohack uses WGS 84 coordinates. For points on the Earth's surface no elevation is needed. --тнояsтеn 18:09, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
I agree with the statement for points on an ellipsoid representation of Earth's surface. But Earth's surface is not ellipsoidal and most points on Earth's surface are not on that ellipsoid. A complete geodetic representation includes latitude, longitude, height above the reference ellipsoid, and specification of the reference ellipsoid (in this case, WGS 84). New Map Type Capabilities for ACME Mapper =

ACME Mapper recently switched from the Google Maps API to Leaflet.js[1]. In the process, some of the map types changed. In particular, the Satellite map type no longer has labels. However, Mapper now has the ability to add overlays, and includes a labels overlay. Since GeoHack users are probably used to seeing Mapper's satellite maps with labels, I suggest changing the URL generated for Satellite so it says "t=SL" instead of "t=S". Done. But this (or rather at least the satellite identifier change) will also need to be done for Kartographer, which will require an actual code change i think. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:23, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

ACME Mapper no longer forgets

Since ACME Mapper's recent update, I find that although GeoHack tries to send me to the correct location in ACME Mapper, ACME Mapper rebels and takes me to whatever location I previously visited. I don't know whether this can be fixed by a change here, or whether something at ACME needs to change. Andrew Dalby 15:07, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jef poskanzer: can you help out ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:37, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
OK, Jef answered my query at ACME, and it seems I just needed to reload after clicking on the ACME link -- which is fine now that I know. Not sure if this affects other users also. Andrew Dalby 08:38, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Show marker on map.geo.admin.ch

add &crosshair=marker to map.geo.admin.ch (Switzerland and Liechtenstein): It's very easy to get lost when zooming in without any guidance where the object is located. 1-Byte (talk) 11:12, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
